Console Window Controls

So I got the wild hair to give this a shot. I told myself no matter the difficulty I was GOING to do it (partly for a future mod) so here it is, no instruction, no service manual just my own wiring knowledge and 6 hrs worth of work.

So the first order of business was to find the interior boot for the door harness. Had to pull the fuse panel down and address which wires were in fact the wires going to the switch in the door.

Turns out that out of 18 wires in the switch plug only about 7 or 8 went into the car. The problem with this is I cant just tie into the interior side of the wires and run them to the switch I have to get new wires into the door. Now the first thing that came to mind was amp bypass procedure. Use the existing wires and tie the inputs to the outputs. Sooo, I have 12 wires that need to go into the door and only about 6 that are available. A couple are redundant grounds, easy enough. But I still needed to use 1 of the mirror wires to complete the wiring. Ill worry about the mirrors in the future. The upper wire go into the door and lower, the car.

So essentially I used the factory wires as an intermediate harness to connect my control wires to the regulator with out having to run wires through the PITA doors. I took extra care to make note of what wire tied to what relative to the wires I was using as I didnt have the exact color combos they have from the factory. And soldered everything accordingly.

The fabrication of the switch was tricky to make it solid, removable, and functional. After some plastic removal I just used existing mounts to mount the front with the help of ABS and some good ol radio backstrap. Made sure my screw in the bottom wouldn't offset anything in the cup holder.

Carefully cut ABS for the top cover. And glued it into place. Looks crude for now but will soon be wrapped in a certain material. (see radio bezel)

So, I wanted to give a basic run down on how this all went down but not a DIY. It's tedious enough that you could easily ruin vehicle components or if not working could leave you with a real mess. It shouldn't be attempted by ametures. It's the kind of thing if you have to have instruction on how to do it you probably shouldn't do it. Now don't think I'm trying to be all high and mighty. This is by no means an auto climate control procedure or LHD to RHD but it's not hooking up a CD player either.

The console peice will get refinished Tues. and the door panels should be done as well. As you all know, most mods I do are for audio, sooo go ahead and guess Look for updates!

Re: Console Window Controls

damn dude mad props for DIY!

just my constructive criticism:
i just never got the reason why some car manuf's put their window switches there from the factory. when i wanna roll up my window, the first place i would think to check where the switches would be is NEAR THE WINDOWS!!!
the LAST place i would think of checking is near the shifter

Re: Console Window Controls

That's not constructive......:(

I know what you mean. It is kinda handy though. I rest my arm on the arm rest so the window switchesare kinda handy. I really wish I could have something like a current model Audi where the stereo controls are at your finger tips with you arm on the arm rest. That is soooo cool to me.

Aaanyway....I moved them for a specific purpose. The cool factor of relocating is just a sencondary feature.

Call my upholstry guy today( which by the way looks JUST like mizlude). He doesn't have my material in stock. Can you believe that!?! He doesn't have my material for me when I call him 12 hrs before I need it!!! Lol I prepare well. So ill get everything fabbed up tomorrow. Don't worry, ill post pics!

Re: Console Window Controls

Alright guys, ready for disappointment? So 2 failed fiberglass attempts. That ate up most of the day. Wasnt setting up, form didn't work right. Bad deal. My brain must have been else where. So after a little more work with different procedure I have 1 door fabbed up. Fabric will be in next week so here is a teaser shot.

Here is what I'm not sure about. The cut out for the crossover, should I leave it open or fill it up before I recover the bottom part? It looks just...kinda...um...there. Dunno. Give me your thoughts. I can also take the cover off and light it off of the door pin. That may be kinda trick.

So the new arm rest and speaker pod will be the same gray suede as the center console. Or should I do black vinyl?

After the mishaps I'm kinda discouraged and not so sure about my choices.

LOL! As soon as I got the crossover mounted from behind I went man that looks cool! And put the cover on and went man...that's not. I'm thinking some white leds would do nicely from the top. I'm going to concentrate on getting the other door's fabrication done. I have some time to think about the finishing touches.

Re: Console Window Controls

I like how you have the switchs in the middle, but the speaker location IMO isn't too great. My knees would just be hitting that all the time. Still a fresh mod and definitely something I may have to look into. I'd just fiberglass the handle to make it look solid

My knees would just be hitting that all the time.
It's actually just out of the way. Once I had the angle I wanted and just the frame of the speaker loosely held on I got in used the clutch, opened and closed the door getting in and out and it is JUST out of the way.

Also, I have a my speaker mounted on the surface of the door panel. If you were to modify the door underneath the speaker pod then you could move them in quite a way in, if not even get close to flush mounting them. Ive seen from your retros and RHD project your quite capable but PM me if you dive into the window switches and I can point you in the right direction.

Now, this was the intentional modification, the console switches were just a by product. Having the speakers in the location they are, as you can tell by the pics, are high enough that it is an uninterrupted shot from the speaker to my ears in either direction even with a passenger. My big problem was when my wife and I would travel anywhere my sound stage was thrown off and it bugged me just enough to make me want to spend hours and hours changing it I had been ithching to add some more of the suede but needed to do it in the right way or it would look awkward. By recovering the armrest/pod in gray the flow of the black from the dash to the door is uninterruped and I still get the accent.

I need to finish my other door ASAP!!! Having mono sound from a set of $1200 speakers is a travesty!

Thanks for the critisism guys. I'm really stewing over the crossover situation.

Re: Console Window Controls

Im going to cover it up with vinyl when I recover the bottom of the door. Rather than the clips on the back and the fixed part on the front I'm going to do the opposite so I still have the screws giving a lot of integrity to the door fastening. Or wrap it individually. What ever works out better, I think it would look a little better all one peice. Little slicker that way.

Re: Console Window Controls

Here is what the cross over looks like under the hood.

6" strip of white LEDs would look pretty cool I think. I ran a 12 ga speaker wire into the door for my speakers so I essentially have a pair of wires unused going into the door (factory speaker wires) hmmm....

Re: Console Window Controls

i love that i keep gettin the sneak peaks to my BB b4 the rest of the world. lol

this is coming out great. i think you should leave the x-over and add an led strip. and cover the new bod w/ the same suede. it'll break the door up nicely and be a great additional accent to the radio bezel.
