Project Rebirth

Well, long story short; my buddy bought this car for 900 bucks. he didnt really know what to look for, and i could only help him so much over emails...

So he moved out here, and we got some minor stuff fixed, and got it to pass inspection. Still needs alot of work though. My buddy doesnt have the time or space to work on it, so he gave it to me knowing it would get the attention and get fixed.

anyways, ive been just hauling ass on the teardown of this car.

Problems:
major front end damage
CEL for EGR crap
front bearings are shot
engine needs new piston rings, maybe more...
lots of cosmetic damage... both doors, hood, fender, trunk lid are dented or creased... can probably salvage the fenders,

Plans:
rebuild the engine
delete EGR crap
wire tuck
replace damaged body panels
make it into a nice respectable car that i can daily drive

Alright, onto the pictures... Those of you with weak hearts should turn away now... its not pretty.

a bit rough from behind

overall, not that bad externally

there is worse out there... this is right on the edge of scrappable haha

not bad rims... not my first choice... they were all REALLY filthy

cleaned em up a bit

H22A1 motor, she goes pretty good, but puffs the blue like crazy

went to work right away stripping the front end down so i could straighten it a bit

you can see the rad support all tweaked...

yep... thats 1 single bolt holding that mount in place... the bottom hole has a bolt snapped off in it, and the top right hole is all stripped out. im probably going to drill out the snapped bolt, and put a new on it there, but the stripped out hole is probably going to need to be drilled and tapped larger. hopefully this wont cause a problem... depending on how bad the block is, i might just get a new block for it...

went to work inside as well. the wiring was a total nightmare! there were wires spliced into other wires, wires that were spliced into 3ft wires that only needed to go 6", so they were all coiled up... uhg! just about pulled my hair out removing the add-on wiring!

all cleaned up and back to stock! the stereo wiring was a joke too!

check out the bottom of the core support! yikes!

definitely in rough shape

done for the night

removed the driver headlight to see the extent of the damage

pretty bad when the bumper stud doesnt even go into the hole its supposed to... they just cut the stud off and welded it wherever it looked best... lazy ass clowns!

just another angle of the 'car'nage

its pretty bad...

anyone know wtf this is?

this vacuum hose was just laying underneath the airbox... not plugged into anything... do i need this module, or whatever it is?

yea, thats right... they welded the damn bumper on this side too... what a disgrace...

straightened it quite a bit... at least it looks semi decent... though i dont know why i wasted my time... i need to find a good core support somewhere...

using the other side as reference.

im assuming the steering wheel had the cruise control buttons... and this car has an aftermarket steering wheel, so i removed the cruise control. no big deal, dont use it anyways. also started a wire tuck.

looks a bit better...

still is pretty f'd though...

poor car. im gunna bring her back to her former fame and glory!

so thats where im at right now.

just a couple Q's...
1) what is that module thing i pointed out with those vacuum hoses...?
2) where is a good place to get replacement parts, like a rad support?

1) its for the stock air intake. if you have an aftermarket intake you can delete all of that, but for the stock intake, that vaccum line should run up to the IM IIRC. do you see any open nipples on the IM?
2) someone parting their car out. check our part outs section.
3) moved.

Re: Project Rebirth

wait no i lied....

did you remove the resonator, or the did the previous owner? its a giant black box part of the stock intake system, under the air filter, and under the bumper cover?

cuz if the previous owner took it out, i'm almost positive that vacuum line runs down to the resonator and controls a lil butterfly valve thats in that sucker.

previous owner probably took it out, there's nothing down there... ill remove it then. what the guy did was remove everything from the bottom of the airbox forward...

it was in a pretty good head on collision i think... either that, or it was his pretty hard on the driver side front... doesnt seem to be much damage from the middle of the rad support to the passenger side, and from the back of the rad support on the driver side, it seems ok...

and all the damage under the car is probably from hitting speed bumps and stuff... or maybe the car was stolen... cause the passenger side door skin was broken when i got it... i just tack welded it back so it looked decent... haha

could have been a stolen car, recovered and sold...

and im in alberta.

Damn What a shame. Some people don't like taking care of their cars. They crashed it and left it to rot. It has a lot of potential. I would like to see this car when it's finished. Keep us updated.

resistor box for your injectors. you need it.

im pretty sure i remember asking about this one before... im also pretty sure its for the EGR, so i wanna remove it
yup EGR. if your gonna block it off/remove it, you can also remove the other parts that are on the drivers side shock tower, above the motor mount. just follow the vacuum lines and plug any open nipples.

here's my boy :)
fuking ADORRABLEEEEE!!!!! hhahahhahahah

Re: Project Rebirth

thanks bro!

that helps alot. so how do you guys wire tuck stuff like the resistor box? just run it inside the cab or something, and extend the wires?

haha! i already ripped all that stuff off the shock tower for the wire tuck haha! guess im not puttin it back on :P i capped off all the open nipples this morning. i also removed that black box thing for the intake.

i got the EGR valve thing out, and im going to fav up my own block plate :) this thing is all caked with carbon... damnit.

haha, he's an awesome little dude. he lays in the grass near where im working and watches me. its pretty awesome. he learns wicked fast too, he went from being shy of my friends to learning tricks from them in 2 days last time we were camping haha!

haha, he found my empty whisky bottle. he loves the plastic caps on em

fell asleep with it. i turned the bottle so you could see the label haha!

Re: Project Rebirth

well, went out and got busy haha

got my block plate cut out. just need to drill it then paint it

what is this thing? seems to have shift linkages connected to it... probably important... is it supposed to have something coming from that tube thing?

removed that black vacuum thing

do i really honestly need that valve cover to intake line?

i had a good laugh when i saw this hahaha! oil trap im guessing, but it still looks really funny...

guess it doesnt work so good, huh...

come on... this is starting to get ridiculous...

this honestly has the same texture and appearance as grease... not oil...

ya know, cause this works just as good... no wonder it has a hell of a time charging the battery...

ummm.... yea... im guessing the fan had its way with this when they pushed the grille and stuff in... im not even going to ask... add a A/C line to my parts list haha

closed her up early today. its starting to get kinda cloudy out, and i dont feel like getting rained on... plus my buddy is picking me up within the hour to go camping! WOO!

just wanted to add this one haha, i like it

nioce! more ppl doing DIY stuff... me likey!!

what is this thing? seems to have shift linkages connected to it... probably important... is it supposed to have something coming from that tube thing?
its just the top of your tranny. that tube is like a breather tube. there SHOULD be a rubber cap on it, but no biggy if you don't have it. if ur really lazy like me, you can fill/top off your tranny fluid thru that tube

do i really honestly need that valve cover to intake line?
if u get an aftermarket intake and it DOESN'T have the nipple for that line, then you can take the whole thing out and put a tiny air filter/breather on the VC nipple. but if it DOES have that nipple, you can either hook that line back up originally, or put two air breathers on both nipples, which just looks dumb. up to you.

i had a good laugh when i saw this hahaha! oil trap im guessing, but it still looks really funny...
nahh i think its just another resonator. there's different sized resonators on the stock intake to target and eliminate different noise frequencies that are claimed "unwanted" from the factory
i think the new camaro has like 6 different sized resonators on the stock intake. ridiculous!!

guess it doesnt work so good, huh...
yuckkkk!!!!

come on... this is starting to get ridiculous...
DIY FTW!!!

this honestly has the same texture and appearance as grease... not oil...
YUCKKKK x2!!

ya know, cause this works just as good... no wonder it has a hell of a time charging the battery...
*points* WELL THERE'S YOUR PROBLEM RIGHT THURR!!!!

Re: Project Rebirth

o yea, what'd you use to get the EGR valve? i tried a 3/8" ratchet/socket/extension, but the nuts were so inward that i couldn't get the socket on.
i also tried a box wrench but didn't have enough room to get any leverage on it or twist it.
