Suspension Refresher

over the weekend i began my suspension refresher project. so far its going pretty smoothly, of course i have ran into a few bumps here and there, but nothing major so far except for one thing. does anyone know an easy way to get the lower balljoint to disconnect from the LCA? every fork that i have tried to use is either too skinny or to wide. any help would be appreciated. i am mostly done with the rear except for the new lower ball joint boots and reassembly. i will be updating this thread daily as i get things done. now on to the parts list.

-KYB AGX struts mated to my Skunk2 springs
-Eibach camber kit +/- 1.5 in Front, +1.5 to +3.0 in Rear
-Outer Tie Rod Ends
-Energy Suspension Front Sway Bar Bushings
-New Bushings and Boots for every suspension component
-Progress Technologies 27mm Rear Sway Bar
-Custom Endlinks made by 71DSP

Re: Suspension Refresher

nice you got the progress bar. just FYI if you start to get random clunking coming from the back suspension, its them endlinks. they are some really crappy endlinks.

wow that sucks, especially since they were 100 bucks. they havent sent them to me yet, bc they are on back order. would you recommend me cancelling the order and just replacing the old ones with new Honda ones?

Re: Suspension Refresher

yea cancel the order. don't use the stock ones though either. they WILL break eventually too. get some custom made ones from 71DSP. he's on several prelude sites. PO i think is his main one. i don't think he's here though. he charges out they ass but they are top quality. i wanna say i spend like 150 or so for mine. do not regret it one bit. he can have them made in a day or 2 depending on if the parts he has to order are back order or not.

is your name kevin also??

i love your car and you always seem to give me good feedback on my posts.. lol.. just thought that was interesting.

But for the lower ball joints my buddy has a tool that is like a claw.. there is a bolt in the middle that you line up below the ball joint and it has three c shaped fingers that hook around the top of the joint and then you can use a socket to close the distance from the point of the bolt and the C - fingers and it pops the joint right out.. not sure where to get this tool, but it was handy when doing my tranny/motor swap

Re: Suspension Refresher

well i canceled the order for the progress end links, and am currently trying to get ahold of 71dsp for the custom ones.

i made alot of headway tonight. we, meaning me and my dad, got the lower ball joints off. they were a motherfr to get off but we got it done. it took a combination of a pitman arm fork, wheel puller, pb blaster, and beatin the doodoo out of them with a hammer.

after we got those off i repacked them and the lower arms with new grease and put the new boots on and torqued everything down to specs. alls we have left on the back is to put the new struts in and finish mounting the sway bar, then its on to the front. no pictures tonight bc there wasnt too much to get pics of. i will have pics tomorrow night of the final assembly of the rear and start of the front.

Re: Suspension Refresher

magically i set the camber dead on for the whole car. the toe was just off really bad. it drives magnificently i am just having some rubbing issues on the back so i am gonna have to do some cuttin or bendin to the lip thats in the arch of the fender. but wow is it an insanely crazy difference. i cant believe how much that sway bar tightened the ass end up and its even on the loosest setting.

Re: Suspension Refresher

very nice... good to see you crawling around working on her.

edit: you doing all suspension bushings... let me know how long that takes... it was about 10.5 hours on mine...
old bushings are a bitch to get out... please tell me you went polyurethane!!! (energy suspension)...

I got my poly bushings and the cars feels so much tighter... I might get an aftermarket swaybar one day, but if I had to pick, I think I would stick with the bushings...

Re: Suspension Refresher

unfortunately energy suspension only makes the poly kit for the SH's only. if i had to guess the whole process prolly took me about 25 hours. there was alot learned so it was def worth all the time.

Should have asked me to help you

I have got my time down to like 2 hours changing struts and taking the springs of and putting them back on and that was with a spring compressor that made me want to kill myself. lol

and the rest would have been a breeze!

I'm so glad I get to do mine all over again here soon!

Re: Suspension Refresher

the struts and springs were the easy part. it was the rear lower ball joints and front lca's that were the bitch. figurin out that i couldnt press out the lca bushings took like an hour and we monkyed with the rear ball joints for at least 3 hours before figuring out a way to get them off. everything else was a piece of cake.

Oh yea I forgot about that.

That's what I get to do to mine soon lol along with tie rod ends and steering rack dust boots.

Make sure I have that tool before I do it and remind me to talk to Dylan about his dad doing the bushings.

I sold those tires i had in the shed tonight and made a whole $200 bucks!!!
still haven't found out about if TB is hiring me or not though. I'll probably call them tomorrow.

Re: Suspension Refresher

are you talking about the lower or upper joints? if you are talking about the lowers you cannot remove the joint from the hub assembly they are one piece. you can just seperate it from the lca and then repack the joint and replace the boot and springclip with new stuff. to seperate it, i used a pitman arm fork and wheel puller and some pb blaster. just used them back to back to finally break it loose.

as far as the uppers are concerned, just take out the UCA's - two bolts. and beat the doo doo out of the joints with a small sledge and they will come out.
