dwend's new 86 CRX 1500

This is my new Auto-X car/ semi beater car. I still have the Prelude don't worry.

It has the best of 80Hp. Torsion front and rear suspension. And best of all It only weighs 1800lbs.
It needs a bit of work. The front fenders are starting to crack and the drivers side has a hole in it. BTW the fenders are plastic not metal.
But for a 25 year old car it is running great.

I bought it from one of the local Honda garages near me (GT imports, Highly recommended). John the owner of GT, Bought the car from a school teacher 15 years ago, he drove the car for a while then he started to use it as a loaner for customers to use when their car is being worked on. GT has done all the maintenance for it, well taken care of.

It is so minimalistic. For one thing it is corroborated so no wires running around the engine bay just hundreds of vacuum lines. The diagram for them looks like a 5 year old's scribble marks. The only comfort thing it has is AC. A crappy 80's early 90's tape deck (possibly the original) hooked up to 2 door speakers.

I plan on doing a few upgrades over the summer. 2nd gen CRX Si seats. Integra radius arms to give it 1 degree negative camber in the front. And some corroborator and vacuum tweaks. I recently bought a set of Civic Vx wheels (13 inches) they weight only 9lb each. Those will be the wheels that I will put some Toyo R888 on for autocross, there are not a lot of 185/60 R13 options out there.

Driving the prelude after driving the CRX, The Prelude feels like a Ferrari.

But do I love driving it. I need to get some better pictures.

Re: dwend's new 86 CRX 1500

I might eventually do a ZC swap. That is still up in the air tho.
B series swap would give more more power, but would be a hell of a time to install.

Not that bad, just expensive. I sold a complete (and I mean complete) D16A1 swap for one of those for $200 and it needed a new valve and bearings. Cheap power. Have fun converting from carb'd to EFI. And only the front is torsion bar. The rear is a solid axle with a PHB and coil springs

Re: dwend's new 86 CRX 1500

I just bought some Si parts that fit the Dx and will improve Hp. It is relatively hard to find performance parts for it. I plan on doing most of the work over the summer. I will have spare cars then.
I have noting major in the near future but little upgrades here and there. A HKS exhaust and some 2nd Gen CRX seat. I need to learn more about the corroborator, I am so used to fuel injection.

I can not argue about the 45mpg tho.

Re: dwend's new 86 CRX 1500

Ha Ha, A H22 in a car that weighs 1800lb, That would be insane. They fly when there is a b16 in it. I couldn't imagine a H22. Hasport makes b-series swaps, and a H2D adapter. I am sure it would call for a bunch of custom work.

Every fill up is around $14.

It tries to bog down when I try to do a normal start, It stalls sometimes when starting at stoplights while I am moving? This is probably just me only driving 5speed regularly for a few weeks now. I need to look at the spark plugs and stuff.

Re: dwend's new 86 CRX 1500

i loved my crx that i had, a friend of mine gave it to me and all it needed was a fuel pump and it ran like a champ, but the plastic upper nose was missing and both the front fenders were broke to hell and back and the front bumper support was rotted out so i took all of that off and just left the hood, took everything off the motor except for the altenator, and threw in one racing seat with some cappy brand 5 point harness that was bolted to every where it shouldn't have been, ripped out all the plastic on the inside including the dash, carpet and sound deadening material then i broke the back glass out and sold the 2 quarter glasses and rivited in some plexi glass, i cut the exhaust off right below the manifold and traileredd it to a hole in the wall 1/8th mile track down the road, where the best i got it to run was a 9.2.. something spinning with a set of bald tires on my stock 14" prelude rims, it was quick mainly because it was soo light, i could literally pick the back tires off of the ground about 8 inches by myself all in all about 3 weeks after i took it to the track i sold it for 100$ to a guy in my neighbor hood because he wanted the motor and trans for his 86 non si, i could have probally gotten more for it but i didn't really care at the time, i made 300$ just off of the curved quarter windows that i pulled off of it...

Re: dwend's new 86 CRX 1500

It has been a while.

I put some 91 CRX Si seats in, this required me to pull the foam off the pan and put the foam on the 86 pans.

Sanded and resprayed the gray panels as well as the front bumper.

I made the old passenger seat into a chair, it is very confy.

5th gen factory radio, I was trying to find a aftermarket radio that was amber, but no one makes any, so why no just use a 5th gens.

Got some Civic vx Wheels 13x5, they only weight 9.7lbs, I use these for Auto-X they have some Yokohama Advan A048 185-60-13's.

Decided I did not like the way the exhaust sounded and need some thing with a little bigger piping for when I do the D16 swap.
I found a Uber Rare NOS Leistritz axle back. This thing sounds GREAT, Plus it is from west Germany, that is how old and rare this is.

I then decided that 70Hp was not enough and bught a D16A1 from a 1st gen Integra, it has 115hp, but is PGFI, I have a carb.
So I was thinking about staying carb and bought a TWM intake mani. Then I realized how much the Dual side draft carbs
were and decided to go Fuel injecting and swap out the wiring harness.

I took the Flywheel to a machine shop and had them take about 5lbs off of it and balance it, all for about $80,
nice price considering a similar weight flywheel cost $200.

Swap week,
got all the wires disconnected from the engine and everything else under the hood.

Pulled the wires from the inside to remove them from the engine bay.

But I had to remove the whole dash to do it, not too hard only about 6 bolts holding the dash on.

The main wire-harness out of the car, ready to put the new one in.

The old main harness.

New engine in and now trying to figure out how to hook the fuel lines up.

Got that all hooked up and started her up. Ran Perfect.

Suspension Time

I got some JEM chassis bracing for X-mas as well as some Hawk pads.
The bracing is C-Pillar which is custom setup, B-Pillar, and Strut bar.

I have a ST rear sway bar on the way.

I need to get some Springs, struts and some torsion bars next.

How she sits now.

Boy is this car FUN now.

I got the seats off of Craigslist. You can probably find some in a salvage yard. I have seen some EP3 seat floating around, that might require a custom bracket thoo.

Re: dwend's new 86 CRX 1500

I kinda miss the sound of the carburetor and the smell of half burnt fuel.

Re: dwend's new 86 CRX 1500

I met a bloke with one of these on the weekend. They're an impressive machine, even in standard form. He wants to fit a ZC to his.

But on yours, well done on that swap, it looks like it was meant to be there all along! How do you go with your autoX in that?

Re: dwend's new 86 CRX 1500

I have only done 1 Auto-X in it since the swap. But it was very cold and wet that day and I spun all 4 runs due to the rear tires hydroplaning.

But in the dry with the old motor it would hold grip well, the lack of PS make it kinda odd on slow sharp corners. It was not "fast" but I would rarely brake.

Re: dwend's new 86 CRX 1500

Ok Big update,
Being in SMF (street mod FWD) or SMurF as known by my local club. I added upgrade motoring 27mm front torsion bars, and 200lb/in rear springs on some ground control coil overs. I know I should be using a heavier spring rate in the rear, I want to go to at least 350lb/in in the back.

Recently I came in contact with a guy at my local club who sold his ITC CRX and started doing spec miata, So he had 8 Khumo v710's just sitting around, he wanted 150 for all 8 so I jumped on them. Got rid of the VX wheels (in my attic in boxes) and got some circle racing wheels 13lb each, which is a bit heaver than before. They are 13x7 and have a 0 offset. But they have GRIP, I mean it hurts to turn for more than 10 seconds. I also had the alignment adjusted to very slightly toe out, this makes it turn in wonderfully. I can't wait for the next auto-x on july 11th.
