Finally Some New Pics With The D40

Thanks to oceanborn and dwend i was able to get some pretty good night shots for it being my first time taking pictures with my D40 in manual setting mode. I know I need some practice but I think I did pretty dang good. Let me know what you think and make any suggestions, bc I will be going out this weekend to get some more pics and then try and pick one for the calendar.

These first couple of day shots were taken on the auto setting before I learned about ISO, aperature, and shutter speed.

And then the rest, these I took using different settings. I took about 40 pictures and these were my best ones.

Re: Finally Some New Pics With The D40

Very good I am uber impressed with the Photos.
I like:
5,The reflection of the wall is perfectly on the body seam
8, same as ^^
10, I love this one it is awesome
12, will look good if you correct the White balance. I hate those lights because there is no WB setting for them on the D40.

Did I forget to tell you I recommend getting the CP-L Filters for the lens, it will help for those unwanted refection in the day photos.

Re: Finally Some New Pics With The D40

FANTASTIC shots mate. I can't believe how good your car looks, especially 11.

I think we need to make your thread required reading for anybody planning on posting up pictures. Truely a worthy ROTM, especially since winning hasn't ended the process, the car has continued to evolve after. Great work.

Re: Finally Some New Pics With The D40

I think about it Adobe Lightroom can fix white balance on JPG files. I think GIMP can as well but that is probably more complicated. Windows vista Photo editor can fix it slightly but not all the way. It can be fixed but they always look funny.

Re: Finally Some New Pics With The D40

would it be better for me to go for a day shot for the calendar or should i go back to one of the previous night locations and fine tune the pictures a little better?

whichever one you choose, which would be the best setting do you think?

i personally love 1,5,6, and 12. i really like 11 too but the reflections get on my nerves.

Do you mind if I do a quick PS with one of your pics?
IMO black cars look good against a white background, It is hard to see the car sometimes if the background is dark.

Re: Finally Some New Pics With The D40

Here are some quickies I did in less than 10min. Remember Photoshop is a tool not a necessity.

This one I used the Smudge tool to remove some distracting relections and some trash on the ground. Then I applied the sharpen filter, then the reduce noise filter. And then brought some of the contrast down (a first for me). I love how the CF pops. The sharpen filter did that.

I used the desaturate sponge tool to remove the color from the back ground lights while leaving the reds on the car. Then took the smudge tool and removed some reflections. This one I think looks much better.

Removed the reflection of you and some on the car. Then desaturated the background.

Hot. Amazing camera! I just got back from a "photo op" with my lude, and I think I'm just going to cry quietly now... I need a good camera. I got a couple buddies that have a D30 and a D40, maybe they can hook me up.

The UV filter only blocks out UV light, UV light is bad for the camera's internal senors. The UV filter can also help against accidental scratches.

The CPL filter is a polarizing filter that will reduce reflections. Just like you Polarized sun glasses do. you can twist the filer so that reduce reflections. if you turn the filter you can reduce the refection on a window so you can see inside. It is only good for sunny conditions.

I am also going to put this in the other thread.
