So this happened all the way back on June 6th 2006 but it is kind of a big deal so I am now going to share my story with you. Prepare for a long read.
The incident.
I left my house that morning to go to work around 11:20. I live in the South East and my shift started at 11:45 in the North West part of town. I took the freeway like I always do. I was going along fine. It was fairly busy so I was following the speed of the traffic and I passed the first intersection and then the second intersection and continued on my way. I was driving in the right hand lane and as I followed the turn around where this hill is, I noticed a “merge left - right lane closed” construction sign followed by a reduce speed to 60km sign. I started to slow down and turned on my signal light to get into the left hand lane. A bluey-gray bigger sedan was riding right beside me so I sped up a bit to merge. The car speeds up with me and stays beside me. I then slow down a bit. The car once again stays beside me. The huge lighted merge sign is closing in so I have two choices I can either slam on my breaks more and risk getting hit by the person shoulder checking behind me or I can speed up again and get in front of the car. I chose to speed up and swerved to the left hand lane. Once in front of the car I slowed down to not a km over 60 (in a way to aggravate the car behind me) and once I was through the construction zone I resumed speed, forgot about the car, continued to my work and walked through the doors by 11:40.
The result.
At around 1:15 I get a message to call home so on my next break I do so. My brother picks up and says “the cops were just here looking for you”. I ask him for what and he goes on to tell me that the cops came to our house and asked if anyone drove a red Honda Prelude and when he told them I did they asked where I was. He told them I was at work and would be until 9:00. When they asked where I worked he said that I was a lifeguard but he didn’t know which site I was at (which was the truth) because I can either work at on of three pools in the non summer seasons. They go on to tell him something along the lines of: “Tayler was reported by a woman to be driving recklessly in excessive speeds, weaving through pylons in a construction zone and we are now looking for him.” Apparently when I slowed down the woman in the car behind me took down my license plate number and vehicle description and flagged down a cop driving down town and reported me.
The up to date news:
I went down to the police station after three days to pick up my own ticket because the officer could never get a hold of me and I didn’t want to get pulled over when I was actually in a hurry to get somewhere. I didn't pay the $270 CAD ticket and went to court to plead not guilty for the offence. After I pleaded I asked for the evidence for disclosure and when I got it, this is what the woman actually reported:
“ This morning (June 6th 06, Tuesday) at approximately 11:30 a.m., I was driving downtown from the south (east) end of Idylwyld freeway when a red car (a camry?) license plate DSY136 was being driven dangerously alongside myself and the many other vehicles proceeding northward.
This individual zigzagged from one lane to the other erratically at ridiculously fast speed limits. The construction zone was marked at 60 kmph and this person endangered not only myself but many other drivers as he swerved his way through the construction zone – and one lane – while he was at one point driving ___ between 2 vehicles in 2 lanes.
He darted left to right and back at speeds I would estimate 110 to 120 kmph or faster. I was very frightened – but it also upset me to see how careless and thoughtless he was driving; endangering himself, myself and many other drivers too.
As soon as I reached 20th street and had to stop for the red light – I called 411 for the number to the city police - ___ also noticed a police officers car ahead – and the police officer walking to his car. I spoke to Constable Nolan Berg and gave him the identification and drivers license of this vehicle and which direction he was headed and asked him if he could please follow up on it.
I believe that whomever the driver of this vehicle is they should be charged not only with driving at excessive speeds but also with undue care and attention for endangering the lives of many other drivers and passengers. “
(The blanks are words I couldn’t read in her handwriting.) When reading it I actually laughed out loud when I read “while he was at one point driving ___ between 2 vehicles in 2 lanes” considering in the sentence before she says it was one lane traffic. But this is what I have to work with. Now it is time to start compiling questions to make her tell the truth. My next court date is October 25th. If anyone has any suggestions I am not going to turn you down. I will keep everyone updated.
