Using NOS without any engine mods?

Is it possible? Will it cause damage? And does anyone have any experience with using NOS with an automatic? I have just been looking at a cheap "NOS" branded kit with a 10lb bottle. It's mostly for show, but I would like to have the ability to use it when needed.

Its just that I am only getting started working under my hood, and its currently all stock, so yeah... Should I just wait a while until I am able to replace a lot of the stock parts? Sorry for the stupid questions!

chances are you would melt your internals or do serious damage to them if you run nos on stock parts so it would be inadvisable

Thats what I figured. :( My dad was talking about a friend of his back in high school that put a 100 shot of NOS in his car without doing anything to the engine. Said he had to help him rebuild it from the ground up. (Just didn't know if he was telling the truth, or trying to keep me off the spray.)

you could probally run a small shot to it with out any problems, a 100 jet is way too much for a stock motor but you could probally tun a 35 or 50 jet and not have to worrry about it unless you were on the trigger 24/7

Yeah, I'm not talking some major spray. Just around 30-40 shot. I found a kit on andysautosport.com for about $250. And it would rarely be used. 2-3 times a month at the most.

i don't think that you would have a problem runnin 30-40, but thats the thing about nitrous, first time could be great then the next time it could melt a hole in the block... then there's always that desire to push it so jets start getting changed untill eventually you're up to a 100 jet and keeping your fingers crossed that you dont melt the pistons

its kinda like when ppl get a turbo kit. They start off with the boost low then turn up a lil then a lil more and so on . IF and ONLY IF you don't put in a shot bigger then a 35 or so and just leave it in it should be ok. But like 91Si4WS said it could be fine the fist few time then one day your engine is frayed .

The main problem is you'd have to have a way to adjust your timing when you spray. A lot of people spraying on stock motors forget about that part. Also you would need more fuel when you spray.

Do a Sneaky Pete 35 shot and you wont hurt anything :D

If you are doing a smaller shot like that you will be fine just dont use it like a total maniac

Yeah, I hadn't thought about that. So as long as I don't over do it, (probably a 30 shot just to be on the safe side), and I don't get trigger happy, it should hold up fine. Like I said before, it is mostly for show, and for occasional use. Thanks for the help everyone! I will let you know if I decide to install a kit. :)

Make sure that w/e kit you get has the safety switch thing so it will only work at full throttle.

Ok, so safety switch, way to control timing, Way to control fuel intake, and a 30-35 shot of NOS. What about a purge? Would it be useful for that small of a tank?

Depending on the condition of the engine, you can use a 50 shot or less safely in conservative amounts, meaning not using it everytime you take off from a red light but you'll be fine for the occasional track day.
If the engine burns lots of oil and just isn't very healthy, then I'd put my money towards a rebuild first.
Just do research. Nitrous isn't as bad on an engine when used correctly. Just too many people watch the fast and the furious and automatically get a misconception and end up screwing their engines up.
I saw a ultimate beginner's guide in understanding nitrous and how to use it and everything that was really helpful for me that also busted several myths and presented new facts. I'll see if I can't find it and post it up for you.

True! :D Another idiotic question, how much spray would be used, and could anything be damaged by playing with the purge often?

My engine is in really good condition, I check the oil religiously, but I rarely have to add any. It runs really nice, other than the tires needing balancing.

I know! (F&TF) I love watching that movie with friends who think they know everything about cars, and they don't have a clue! They think just because it was on F&TF, its automatically true.

be sure to have a spare set of spark plugs too, the common misconception with spray is "well maybe it'll be fine if i only use just a little" which isnt exactly wrong, but its not right either. using nitrous often or rarely still means that your using it, it just becomes a matter of how long it will take to change out your parts. a few things to watch out for are well, spark plugs, barrings, and after a while pistons too. just make sure you have forged pistons vs. cast (forged handles heat better) and after at least 5 nos refills to check spark plugs for any type of yellow or orange powder on them. if ya see that... time to get new ones.
