any of you seen it? it's amazing! looks like the shape of the car is changing until you see that the color of the paint is changing at different angles--saw a Mustang that went from green>purple, back again as it shimmered through a side street. I called a couple of body shops; looks like it goes for ~400$/qt. great effect though! red>black would be great, but don't know if that's available. anyone have it?

yeah it's been done... seen it at shows before. i wanted to change mine to a pearl white paint job a few years ago. looks white, but at certain angles, it'll look like it's got a faint blue hue to it.

yeah i want to eventually do my car pearlwhite with the blue pearl in it cause i like the way it looks but about the camillion paint, some of the ones that they have in it look good like purple/blue/green but some of the otherones i've seen just look goddy, or maybe its because most of the cars i've seen it on have been jacked up with like 24" rims on them, ive never seen it in black to red, what you could do is a black base coat with red metallic flake over that, i've seen that done on some bikes before but never on a whole car though, it looks good and it gives it that black to red look when the sun hits it right. and was the mustang you seen a cobra by anychance, because ford offered that paint on the cobras, i cant remember which year though, but i know its on the 99 to 04 body style.

Talked to a buncha bodyshops that do it, sounds like some of the aftermarket paints are much more impressive than what Ford put on their Mustangs and Contours; one shop menitoned 18 colors--! I'm really not interested in the green/purple thing--I'd just never seen it before and it was surprising. Don't really care if 'someone on here' has done it before either. If I had to keep up with what someone else had already done, lol, what: be 'drifting' in tokyo, wtf... chrome paint? any links to pix?

The first vehicle I've seen with the Tri-Coat paint job was the Ford Tuscon in the movie Swordfish w/John Travolta that came out a couple years ago. I've seen at least 20 cars with it since.

I could've sworn it was a TVR. :p
Chrome paint is cool but I'd research something like black - red, maybe not that but something original.

Wow. I can't believe you guys like that paint. I think it's ghetto as all hell. There's a reason that high end cars don't come with that green/purple paint. Because it's trashy.

I can't believe an old thread is being revived with comments like that.

No its not called Pearls....Pearls go in the clear coat. The actual color changing paint, is a paint all its own. It is so expensive, because the paint goes thru a laser process that cuts the molecules of paint into angles, there for creating the color changing effect.
Or thats what I have been told. But I do know that the pearls only add a color effect, not change the whole view of the paint.
And the Mustangs were offerd in "Mystichrome" Only available from Ford, and it cost about $10,000 and can only be done by a certified Ford painter. Who will keep all the remainders and scrap paint, when the job is complete.

FYI pearls are added to the actual paint, not the clear. NOTHING should be added to the clear.

The 97 To 01 White Ludes Are Tri Coats. Its White With White Pearl. The Way Its Done Is They Spray A White Basecoat On, Then They Spray The Pearl Coat Wich Is Pearl In A Colorless Base Coat. The Last Step Is The Clear Coat Which Doesn't Normally Have Pearl In It But It Can Be Done. Its The Same Thing With Candy Colors.

there are several ways that pearls and metallics can be applied. they can be put in the basecoat with the color or mixed with an intermediate clear and put over the color for a more dramatic color flop. thats why pearls come dry so you have many options for application. I have sprayed pearls many different ways but what seems to please customers most is when the pearls are applied over the basecoat in an intermediate clear. it just depends on the painter and customer preference whether they like a more dramatic or subtle look. I know a lot of painters that will only put the pearl in the basecoat because it is much more difficult to apply over the base because pearls like to mottle if they are not sprayed just right. But as a custom painter I have a lot more experience than regular collision shops. We usually use house of kolors paint but if your looking for some nice custom paint at some what affordable prices check out alsacorp.com, they have color shifting paint called mystic for like $250 a gallon. you'll never find that anywhere else.

I dunno why everyone thinks u can get a black chameleon paint job coz u cant.. the colour black is not a colour in essence..its the absence of light reflection so how do u change the colour black to another colour???? i was gonna get a kandy red chameleon paint job but paint shop was asking for $1800. it consists of 3 coats.. a silver mettalic base coat, the colour of your choice and then the top coat.. and if you get a scratch or dent ur well and truly ****ed..
