So I was TRYING to drive to NY to help rich and kenny do a clutch job on kenny's SH, and about 15 minutes away from school the engine starts bugging the fcuk out, then oil and battery light come on and engine shuts off.
So then I spent about 2 hours trying to get my car back to school, 2nd gear on the shoulder with my hazards on, cuz the car WILL NOT go any faster than that!! Sounds like the bottom end is knocking
Checked the oil and its about 2 quarts low. So I'll look at that tomorrow.
Annnnnddddddddddd to top that all off..... I think I lost my wallet/got pick-pocketed in philly last night, right after getting some cheesesteaks!!!!!
They say bad things happen in 3's....
I just got home and asked my parents if they needed to tell me anything, and thank god they didnt. I'm just waiting for someone to be like "oh yea nick, there's something you should know......."

It's a sign that you need an H22 ni66a.
seriously. i'm about 95% positive the turbo kit is going up for sale, that'll fund my H22 from HMO or somewhere that i get a warranty from, then i'm not even gonna TOUCH that motor after i/h/e, clutch and FW.
unless a miracle happens
Dwend
02-16-2008, 07:09 PM
That sucks. Sorry to hear. Let try for that miracle.
JARyder19 has a H23 that I think he wants to sell badly.

www.hmotorsonline.com is awesome
You COULD get an F20B so you can maintain your "not on the H22 bandwagon" status. Hmotors carries them. be sure to get the LSD tranny that comes with it. I don't know why more people don't get that engine.

The one I made was simple as can be.
F22Ax block
H23A1 head
F23A1 head gasket
H23A1 timing belt and lower timing gear
F22Ax water pump
F22Ax balance shaft belt
Just slap it together and go

ok so: i took the oil pan off right now and checked over the bottom end, and everything APPEARS to look ok. no metal shavings in the oil/pan.
but what i did notice is this: the first time i pulled over yesterday, i noticed that the #2 spark plug, the finger at the end of the plug was bent and touching the tip of the plug, so i replaced it with another NGK plug that i had.
then i tried driving it about another 5 miles.
now the same exact thing happened to the #2 spark plug.
now: is it possible for the piston to slam into the tip of the spark plug?
or are the plugs recessed in the head??

if they are the correct plug then there should be no clearance issues. they should be flush with the top of the combustion chamber. thats how they looked when i took my head off
twokexlv6coupe
02-17-2008, 02:46 PM
ok, change that to both #2 and 3 spark plugs are doing that.
could bent valves possibly hit the plugs??
94ludeguy
02-17-2008, 02:49 PM
no it shouldnt b.c i bent valves also and they were not bent that far. i would get some new plugs, make sure they are correct one and them fire it up. it will run with bent valves but will sound like ****, really sputtery

matter of fact, we parked in front of Geno's and walked over to Pats cuz there wasn't enough parking in front of pats
i told my friend "geno's looks too much like a seaside boardwalk attraction. pats is nice and civilized looking from the outside"
You made a wise choice my friend! =P. But, to be honest... it's "to each his own". I know plenty of people who hate Pat's but love Geno's... mostly because people don't like Pat's with whiz (but, most people don't realize that you can get them with regular cheese too if you ask for it). My thing is, I think Geno's is too dry... but my favorite is really Jim's... you gotta try them next time, there's a few around the city... the one on South Street is the best.
Funny story about Pat's.. ever see "The Soup Nazi" on Seinfeld? Well the guys at Pat's are like the stake Nazis if you don't order correctly... I was up there one time, and a guy ordered one "with, whiz" (for those of you who don't know the etiquette at Pat's... "with" means with fried onions... and "whiz" means cheese whiz... if you wanted a steak with american cheese and no fried onions... the proper etiquette is "one steak, without, american"... they do it like that because they get so busy, it simplifies the orders for the cooks)... So anyway... this guy orders his stake "with, whiz"... and as he gives them the money, he asks for "a little more onions"... well this was his first mistake... the guy glared at him with intensity but kept his cool, and put some extra fried onions on top... then, the guy ordering took it too far... he looks down at the stake and goes "i'm sorry... that's too much on--" and before he could finish his sentenc... the guy working at pats RIPS the steak sandwich out of his hand... throws it into the trash... and then THROWS the dudes money back into his face and "politely" told him to get out of line lol... It was like the real life version of "INSTANT BAN!"
Moral of the story: Remember to order correctly at Pat's... because they will not hesitate to permaban you from their facility... they get PLENTY of business, and don't need yours =P... it's one case where "the customer's always right" doesn't apply...
Ok... </end rant>... back on topic now =P.
twokexlv6coupe
02-20-2008, 12:52 PM
Hahaha yea i've heard plenty about ordering it correctly or else they'll send you to the back of the line. being my first time @ pats, i asked matt "do they REALLY enforce that??" he's like "yea dude, dont mess it up or else they'll send you to the back of the line" (which at this point is 30-40 people deep)
so i kept practicing it while waiting on line, and the moral of my story is a "without, provolone" is mighty delicious

I don't know how much damage you'd be doin to your cylinder walls just by cranking a few times... but it's definitely not gonna be GOOD for your motor lol. Remember that you gotta crank your motor over for a while... once on each cylinder. I would definitely add a little bit of oil if it's bone dry...

well, it turns out my timing belt skipped a tooth or 2. that would explain why i had no power and it was runnnig like sh!t
think the valves are still fine??

that's questionable. I'd pull the head and check.

big props to rich for comin out today to help me pull the head.
well between the skipped t-belt, and the broken valve clip, THAT valve was def bent, i had to hammer it outta the head. you could also see where that valve was hitting the piston.
idk about the rest of the valves tho.
as for the cylinder walls, they look DECENT, no major scoring. but who knows if there's more damage that i can't actually see.
and idk about putting my old H23 head on this block now. after looking at both heads side by side, my old one looks pretty discolored, like a burnt orange. prolly from running that motor without oil?
sooo.... i guess right now the PLAN is to pick up ray's F22a for $200 next weekend and drop that baby in.

you will be disapointed. I'd buy a head gasket and put the old head on before I'd put a f22 in my car.

Man Nick, you're really having some bad luck. But I'd think again before swapping in an F. Firstly, do they swap straight in, or do you need to muck around with engine mounts and such?

disappointed or not, i need a motor in the car, soon.
plus after getting a couple of other opinions, i dont feel very comfortable putting my old head on this block, nor do i feel too comfortable with the bottom end on this motor. there's just so many things that could be wrong with either the head or block that i can't see, that its just not worth the gamble.
and colin: F22's came in the 4th gen S models, so it SHOULD be almost a direct swap. just gotta worry about OBD2 engine with OBD1 car.

Yeh I figured, but I wonder if all the mounting hardware was different as well? Or if the H23 trans will bolt up, or all those other thing you never think about like cruise control, a/c, etc. Ok, I'll stop now.

dude this sucks, tolls just went up (thank god ezpass gives you a dollar discount) but still, it sucks.
and yea, lets get this thing going, i'll see if i have any goodies i can bring so we can play, just do your HW on that obd2 crap, maybe you can make it work with a obd1 or something like a step down harness like they do with the horrifying 5th gens.

hey sorry i'm getting a late response to your PM. seems like you have everything under control now. I really dont know what to tell you as to why it happened without alot of background information on the motor. The skipped timing belt tells me that maybe the belt was not tensioned correctly or maybe the tensioner gave out at a certain point in time, i dunno. I havent really read your whole thread.
