The new motor starts. There's no fuel leaks anywhere. New cap, rotor, plugs, wires. It'll idle ok for a while, but if I try to give it any gas, it'll sputter, nearly die, pop, then resume idling. If I leave it alone it'll just start popping on its own. Inside the distributor looks clean as an 18-year-old distributor is going to get. There's a small exhaust leak between the upper and lower exhaust manifolds, but I doubt that would cause any problems.

Only other wierd stuff with the engine is no p/s belt (massive p/s leak somewhere) and no airbox and snakes (just the filter at the end of the elbow).

No codes, either. I know the ecu light works because I see it flicker whenever you turn the key into or out of the "II" spot.

I'm going to try putting the old ignition stuff back in to see if that helps... I know the motor ran fine on that stuff in the old rustbucket.

Hehe I had the 1 and 2 plug wires switched around at the distributor cap. I didn't think to double-check it against the old wires. Good thing I left the old plug wires on the cap or I'd still be confused

The first dur-duh-durrrrr moment of the whole swap project. Now I just gotta top off the tranny, bleed the clutch, and cruise this mother****er
