what do you plan to make it out of?
you might be best off going to a shop and having them make you one out of tubing

but you said DIY so what do you plan to do?

im probably making it out of pvc piping, just get a rubber connecter, some clamps and air filter (perferrably K & N)
and then ill just paint all of it to make it look better than it would...... whats a DIY??

if your going to make it out of pvc, just use your oem intake pipe and put a filter on the end of it. DIY = do it yourself

yeah i recomend that
theres this part you can buy that goes in teh stock arm, and then you can pop a big old K&N intake on htere, definately a good idea!

here is a pic of my buddies civic. its very much like i described in an earlier post.

and dont use pvc piping, what the hell is this world coming to? the hardest parts for a true cold air is relocating the battery and taking out the windshield washer bottle out. then taking a hole saw and enlarging the hole. make it worth it, if not, you'll be labeled a ricer by all your civic buddies, and that would be bad, very bad.
dont have the money? then save up. i'd say you could do if for less than 200dollars in materials, and it would be way worth it!
