View Full Version : Newb thread.......stock 5th gen 1/4 times.

So, I realise that it's a bit of a newb question, but having read around a bit, I've seen some pretty widely varying times for stock 5th gen Prelude's in the 1/4.
I know that most car magazine's got 15.4-15.6 at 89-91mph out of these things, and that you can usually beat published times.
But........
I've seen people posting times as slow as 15.8's for the 1/4.
What gives?
My 97 SH (BONE stock, and currently sick), is a tad faster than the fiancee's Neon R/T (which runs 15.5-15.7 with HER driving it), and is a dead match for my NX2000 from a roll (the NX hovers right around 15.0). Given this, I was assuming the 5th gens should be all in the 15.1-15.2 range for SH's, and maybe high 14's for a NON SH car (60lbs lighter and 4-8whp more)......................
So anyway..........what are some stock times you guys have run, and how were you launching and shifting?

Bump..........
Anyone?
I mean, come on, I KNOW a fair few of you have run in stock form yes?

well its not that hard to get a bad 1/4 mile time: you just hafta suck at driving. so thats nothing surprising.
but when a stock 5G is running like a 14.3, THEN you hafta question whats wrong. with a good driver, stock 5G's are low 15 seconds.

So, 15.2-15.4?
Trapping what? 91.XX mph maybe?
Hmmm..........seems a *little* slow, but I guess that's what you get trying to launch a peaky FWD car.
I'm still kinda surprised nobody has posted any high 14 second timeslips though......
3.4L DOHC 5 speed Grand Prix's (like my winter beater), Lumina Z34's and Cutlass Supreme's are about as fast (most run 15.2-15.4 at 90ish mph), but I know of at least one Z34 owner who has gone 14.9XX bone stock right down to the air filter.
And all these cars only make around 175whp (+/- a bit), and all weigh around 3400lbs (vs a 2950-3050 5th gen that makes 160whp +/-).
Seems to me, that fat GM tanks like mine should be SLOWER than a 5th gen due to the 3-5% worse power to weight ratio.............
Oh well.
Maybe I can fix my cranky valve, throw a decent clutch in the car and be the *first* (  ) 5th gen in the 14's totally stock (well.....except for said clutch anyway).
RIIIIIGHT.......
Anyone else have comments, times, etc etc..........

On the weekend I ran a 15.2;
60' 2.315
1/8 9.86 at 71.48
15.26 at 91.20
My car is stock in terms of powertrain but has Eibach Springs, adj. KYB struts and 17s with 215/40/17 tires. I find its taking me awhile to get used to launching such a peeky car on tires that aren't too good for drag racing, next time I go out I think a 2.2 60' should be do able.
Also are you on 60degreev6? I seem to remember someone with a sig. with a list of cars like yours. I used to have a 94 LQ1 Cutlass Convert.

Interesting times.........
So low 15's ARE very doable.
And no, I am not on 60degV6, but I am on W-Body.com and have had plenty of arguments about various things with Ben Phelps on 3-4 different forums
He's a smart guy and has a good website. I'll STILL probably get around to buying one of his chips for the GP.
Now my old roomate, HE was on 60deg under the username "Canada" for a while.............at which time he owned the GP (he bought it, sold it back after a while...long story), along with his 3400 swapped Beretta, Camaro etc etc......

TEL ran a 15.4 in his SH when it was truly bone stock... and yes, he's an excellent driver.
I haven't run mine yet. It won't be stock when I do since my pressure plate is why I haven't run. Got a stage 2 clutch and lightweight flywheel waiting to go in. :)

I've never seen a 5th run higher than 15.4 at Epping . The fastest stock 5th gen I've seen was a 14.8. He was one of the guys that raced against us in NHRA so he had a ton of experiance track-wise. Just practice and practice no one runs a record time their first time out or second really. I bet most of the people who have gone to the track here do so once or twice and dont have a lot of experience and therefore run more or less average times.

Not to sound like an ass, but Wasnt the 5th gen lude designed to be a champ handler, not a drag car. Its has some nice power numbers, but doesnt seem to put it down correctly to be a fast straight liner. Its more of a luxury sport coupe than a fast econobox.

You are correct the prelude was made for "handling" BUT not everyone is into that, or some people wanna go fast along with some twisties. Its not hard to make a prelude quick if you know what you are doing.
And yogi i will grab my time slip next time im at my parents. but remember that was like 4 years ago so im probably slower now...HEHE
