View Full Version : DIY: Silver Gauge Bezels

The Silver Gauge Bezels give your dash a racy look, and the best part is, if you've got silver spray sitting around, its pretty much free!
this is more for the delicate hand, so if you usually end up breaking stuff i recommend having a friend help.

Estimated Time: 1 Hour
Materials:
Silver Spray Paint
two philips head screwdrivers
[one short one long]

The first step is making your way to the bezels: there are two screws under the "hood" of the gauge cluster shown here:
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/Thomastk/DSC00311.jpg

Once the screws are out you need to take the trim off. i used a screwdriver to get me started until one side popped, then i pulled the other off.
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/Thomastk/DSC00312.jpg

Then your left with something like this:
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/Thomastk/DSC00313.jpg

Next is the four screws holding the cluster in place shown here:
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/Thomastk/DSC00319.jpg
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/Thomastk/DSC00318.jpg
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/Thomastk/DSC00317.jpg
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/Thomastk/DSC00315.jpg

i used the smaller screw driver on the above ones because of clearence,
then i used the longer one to get the back screws. Make sure you do not drop the screw in the dash.

Once the four screws are out the cluster will pull foreword, now is a good time to drop the steering wheel as far down as it will go if you haven't already done so.

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/Thomastk/DSC00320.jpg

pull the cluster out and find the clips holding the plastic sheild preventing you from playing with your gauges. they should look something a little like this:
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/Thomastk/DSC00321.jpg

Once that is off it may be a good idea to clean this off as you've probably gotten your fingerprints all over the front and back. ah heres the plastic thing:
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/Thomastk/DSC00322.jpg

All right enough play! next you have to get the bezels off, i used the tiniest flat head i could find and slowly and carefully pried them off, BE VERY CAREFUL: you can scratch your dash badly and even break the bezels if you are clumsy!

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/Thomastk/DSC00323.jpg
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/Thomastk/DSC00324.jpg

Now they're off, get to painting. i chose silver but you could definitely do any color you want, i have red LED spotlights and could have very much put them as red, choose whats best for you.
pop the bezel back in, pay attention, you can just cram these in. there are little points that need to be pushed into the little holes
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/Thomastk/DSC00325.jpg

Reinstall the four screws, pop the trim back on and install those two screws.
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/Thomastk/DSC00326.jpg

Ta daaaa, your all done and you've got a look for literally cents. Enjoy!
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/Thomastk/DSC00328.jpg

EDIT;
PLEASE, everyone be careful, i do not want you to have to buy a new clear plastic sheild because you pryed to hard, if it doesn't feel like its going t go then don't do it!
this is a nice and very cheap looking mod, but it takes skill not everyone has, your bound to break a bezel, or loose a screw, this SHOULDN'T be your first mod, get some practice and break things that are much easier to replace first!!

Thankyou and enjoy!

It's a great little mod, and it makes a huge difference to the perspective from the drivers seat.

Also, can't you guys take the bezel off the cluster? I removed the bezel from the cluster and that made everything a lot easier.

when i removed them there was like the gaping hole, idk

they really light off when i aim the red leds at them ;]

I like the silver painted bezels better than the silver JDM ones. It stands out better.

Did that...it definitely makes a HUGE difference. It actually gives the cluster a bit more depth...And thats awesome. But ya.
Word.

thomas97

ive got to save money where i can cause my engine needs attention,

with this and my other DIY i have saved:
$100 on skirts
& however much the JDM gauge things cost.

Great Success!

EDIT:
i actually have a chrome paint, and i found a set for 3 bucks offa broken lude  so i might make a chrome set, i think that would look spectacular.

yeah i was thinking chrome to mathe the other accents in the car like the door handles and the ring on the shifter

thomas97
09-26-2007, 08:26 PM
yep, otherwise the silver pops, whether the chrome paint is around or not, silver is a definite must

this was probly the worst mod ive ever done in my life(its not your fault thomas). To start out with i broke the plastic shield taking it off. As it broke it stabbed me in my hand and left tiny plastic pieces embedded in my hand.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h225/broncosi/img112.jpg

After i bandaged myself up i continues after finding the rings were nearly immpossible to get out with out scratching or messing something off, i finally got to my last one(spedo one) and down to the last 2 pins and it broke in 2 places.

I superglued it back together and let it dry. I replaced my bandages as there was blood getting on my bezels and i wanted them blue not red. I then sprayed them and re-installed them, played with the speedo and gas guages, tried to roll my odometer back then put everthing back together.

When i reinstalled everything i realized once i started my car, i had flipped the speedo needle to 160 in attempt to take a pic to show that i was topping out in my kitchen and the needle rested pointing straight down so when i started the car it just hit that rest prong and wouldnt go any farther(as seen in pic).

Just when i was about to take everything apart again i found a long screwdriver and manages to fit it through the giant crack in the plastic to knock the needle back around but not before gouging the bezel.

here are some pics, i personally think its ugly as what. so i bought a new shield and should be in in a few days. Ill prob repaint again when i take it out.

So my advice, take your time and have bandaids ready any time your working on your lude.

thanks chillz,
be VERY VERRY PATIENT
the reason that guy broke his sheild is probably because he couldnt wait and got eager, PUSH the little sheild glass clips out dont get half off and then try to use that as leverage, he is living prrof that the thing can break!!
btw, if you can detach the whole thing and take it inside, i almost lost the screws about 60 times.

I did mine today, and it is sooooooo awesome!!! Probably the best almost free mod out there. See my member rides page (http://www.preludezone.com/showthread.php?t=7237) for pics!

yeah alrdy saw your, looks great, hope my DIY was helpful!

mcimo
02-05-2008, 08:15 PM
Haha actually I couldn't look at it while I was doing it, since my internet went down for a bit! But I've already read it about 50 times so I would know what to do, LOL!
I probably spent a good 3-4 hours making sure I did it right! I wouldn't even attempt this without bringing the whole unit inside, this is not a quick mod. I dissasembled the entire unit, which made the whole process alot easier. Again, make sure you take your sweet precious time with this, because the rings are very light and fragile. I used a quick drying paint, but I still should have waited a little longer, as the ring for my tach got a little smudged on one part. I might repaint it again sometime, just because I'm pretty anal about stuff like that. But this was a great mod nonetheless!

thomas97
02-05-2008, 08:28 PM
yeah, i shoulda taken it apart, but i didnt hae the time, it took me about an hour total

mcimo
02-05-2008, 08:29 PM
Oh yeah by the way, after you get the first two screws off, you don't need to use the screwdriver to get the those two tabs popped out! Just use your hands, grab from the bottom of it, and pull straight towards you. You might want to add that to the tutorial. I would know because me being me, I did a practice run of taking it off the day before so I would know what to do when I painted it.

thomas97
02-05-2008, 08:30 PM

mcimo
02-05-2008, 09:44 PM
Maybe if you say please! LOL J/K LMAO LUD3ROX0RZ.
Anyways, its Duplicolor DS025 Instant Chrome (http://www.duplicolor.com/products/gold-chrome.html).
Dries in minutes. Or so it says. But seriously, maybe like 3 minutes between coats. Just make sure to let it dry a while before you put back on.

thomas97
02-05-2008, 09:49 PM
ah thats why, you found chrome paint, keep that link up, its useful fo people wanting to do this mod, silver is good, but that looks much much better

mcimo
02-05-2008, 10:02 PM
Yeah, I knew it wouldn't actually look like chrome, but I acheived the look I was going for. It gives it a much richer tone thant just silver paint I think, plus it goes on nice and easy. I think the instant gold would be hot too. If anyone does it with gold, post up some pics.

Very nice post Thomas. If you dont mind there was a small detail that would help with getting the actual rings off. I took the cluster completely out. There were 3 plugs on the back that simply came off and the black bezel came off just like the clear cover. If you look where the sun in conveniently shining on the back of the gauge bezel you will see the melted plastic rivets.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll75/jtccross/0804081910.jpg?t=1217909131

If you cut these off with a sharp knive blade they will pop off very easily and the bezel ring will come off quite easily with no risk of damage to the fragile ring. Also when prying apart plastic panels make a point NOT to use a flat blade screwdriver as the corners will damage the soft plastic. Try and use either your fingers or something plastic. Even a popsicle stick will work great in a pinch.

I have a brand new Honda Prelude red stitched knob in the package. I opened the package just to take pics. It has never been used or even installed.

If interested let me know, I would let it go for the right price.

So I went to do this mod to my lude, but I could not get the bezel rings out without sctatching them up. I looked on ntpog.com, and they said to pop them out by pushing on the plastic posts, but I though that all your going is pushing on the trim and that isnt pushing the bezels out. Does any one have another way I can do this or even just some help.

Thanks
