When we last left our heroes:

This is the Rustbucket. 134k miles, but the body looks like it's put 300k miles on submerged in the Great Salt Lake. Close. It spent a couple of years in Chicago. There's rust under most of the weatherstripping, holes in the roof, and rust on the rocker panels.

Gutted the dash. All the wiring is different between the S and Si. There's some little doodads and black boxes that are different, too. Helps to have the whole donor car instead of buying everything peacemeal.

The wiring.

Out comes the engine. The radiator and fans were removed to give me a little more breathing room.

The rusted-out firewall gave pretty easily when we used it as a fulcrum for a steel pipe to guide the motor out. Oops.

Motor out.

Gonna go here.

It's in :D

Right now I'm pulling out the S's wiring. It's been either way too hot or raining lately, so I haven't been able to get as much done as I would like. I also don't have as much energy now as I did at the beginning of this whole thing :D Should be running by the end of next week, though.

***UPDATE 6/15/06***
Got some solid progress in today :D After unlocking my door and retrieving my keys, I got all of the wiring harnesses swapped out. I was hoping to be able to finish the wiring tomorrow, but I have to work in the evening :( I'll try to at least get everything plugged in and the splicing done. Just as well that I have to go to work: Need to buy a fuel pump and some metal fuel line :D

I should be able to test the electricals Saturday.

***UPDATE 6/20/06***
Yay the electricals seem to be working properly :D Left headlight doesn't pop up, but I probably just missed a plug or something. Tomorrow I don't have to work in the afternoon, so I can work on the car all day :D Since all the major stuff works (tail lights, etc) I can put the dash back together and get everything back in ship-shape, electrically.

Then I need to get a fuel pump and some metal line, and I'll be drivin! OMG a running car holy ****!

nice porsche!

Some serious wiring in the old ludes eh!

When you look at that rust patch on te roof of your donor car, it makes the 4th gen sunroof rusting problem look pathetic!

I got the same deal to do this week, ripping out all my S wiring to install the JDM VTEC wiring loom so i can run my engine and JDM climate control. Any one say nightmare?

***UPDATE***
6/20/06

No pics again. Looks just like the rustbucket did when it was stripped.

Also went to the junkyard today for some pieces I forgot to get out of the rustbucket before they towed it. Fortunately the car was still there, and all the stuff I needed was still on the floor. I also grabbed a *crapload* of shiny new 10 and 12mm-head bolts to replace the ugly ones in the engine bay.

so squishypanda, do you have any mods lined up for your swap like a turbo or cams or anything?

SquishyPanda
06-23-2006, 11:56 AM
I'd like to do turbo... but if I do, i'll get another engine and build it with that in mind. For this motor, I think the most I'll do is some headwork. Get the TB and intake mani bored out, polish the lower manifold, get the head ported and bigger valves done. And a cam to match. Then a S-AFC (actually I just saw an ad for Apex-i's AFCneo, but I don't wanna know how much it costs) to tune it.

I can't afford standalone, and then there's smog legality issues :( I can handle an AFC and midnight 3rd-gear pulls on the freeway, though :D

And then the latest SCC with that feature on Opera got me all fired up to get that TIG welder I've had my eye on :D

if your going to run the same car with a future turbo setup why not get a s300? i think the neo is up there in price and tuning it will cost a lot im sure. you should look into the ph3/pk2 thread on pp.com as well just to see if using the ph3 rom would interest you. well good luck man.

SquishyPanda

yeah i'll look into it as I get deeper into this. I'm just stoked because I've got the electricals together, and I'm almost done with this project :D

Anyone think I can run a fuel line up the center tunel if I shield it enough and mount it below the piping so it doesn't soak in hot air?

probabaly. dont see why not but if you have 4ws you dont want them to hit each other.

SquishyPanda
06-26-2006, 11:16 AM
no 4ws :D Should be plenty of room.

i have a 89 prelude s and it looks awful compared to yours. i would like to do a jdm b20a swap but i am short by about 300 dollars for everything i would need.

SquishyPanda

Yes! It started! And sprays fuel *everywhere* from the old copper gaskets on the fuel filter. But at least I know it isn't broken :D

Next up is some new gaskets, oil change, refill the tranny, wash, and cruise!

damn that car is gunna look sexy wen its complete

SquishyPanda

OK so it's got a new fuel filter with new copper gaskets. It starts, idles, shakes, sputters, and misfires, in that order. If I try to goose the gas, it bogs and pops. If I let it sit and idle for a while, it'll start to pop all on its own. There's no fuel leaks anywhere, and the cap, rotor, plugs and wires are new. Maybe I'll put the old stuff back on and see if that helps anything...

Did you have any issues with the gas tank after the swap? Going from S to Si?

Yeah, I saw that. I've been talking to him on PP.com and was wondering if he was going to update this thread about some of the problems that he was having with his gas tank not having baffles in it. From what I've learned, the S models don't have baffles in the tank and the Si models do. So if you decide to do a conversion from S to Si, it would be a good idea to include changing out the tank also. I got hosed at the junkyard when I bought a 91 Si tank. $100.00 for the tank and $50.00 for the dam fuel pump that was still in it. I should have just taken it out and told the dude to bite me. A new one is only around $45.00.
