you can use krylon or rustoleum spraypaint.
prepwork is key. clean everything with solvent.
it's better to do a few thin coats than one heavy coat. this will prevent running and drips. Also give the pieces ample drying time. Don't go throwing the stuff back in your car an hour after you paint it, you will mess it up for sure.

i used duplicolor, they have some wheel paint that works great, all you have to do is clean the plastic piece off with some clorox wipes or something so theres no grease. Duplicolor has a gunmetal series with 3 or so different gun metal colors, looks great and is almost an exact factory match.
I just did my center piece to match my shift cover.

Whatever you do... THINK IT THROUGH FIRST!!!! I painted mine and loved it for a little... Now I'm really regreting it. Just think about it :P

you really dont have to paint either...just get a nice dash kit, and if you want additional parts to be colored, just buy a vinyl wrap kit.....or you can just buy enough vinyl to do your own pieces....you can always take it off, unlike painting...theirs a nice dash kit on wooddashexperts.com, and rvinyl.com carries some good vinyl wrap kits etc....

i am actually painting my dash and some other pieces in side. i got krylon paint for plastic right at pep boys. no priming needed just have to clean it really good. i used alcohol n paper towels. cleans nice but you have to watch out for lint. do a couple of light coats, get some fine sandpaper (320 grit), and put on a nice heavy coat but not to heavy.
