is anyone sure if this is completely correct? i could be wrong but from everything i have ever seen, the automatics have more powerful motors to compensate for being an auto. just wondering

It should've been cited at least so we can be sure if it was even a valid source!!

I was never aware of autos having more power to compensate, interesting.

here is an example so i dont seem completely crazy.

my dad had a 2002 mitsubishi mirage for a while.

although i am not sure about exact HP ratings, the manual came with a 1.5L motor which was rated less HP, where the automatic came in a 1.8L with more HP.

that is an example i have come across

That isn't always the case tho. Check ot the Mazda RX-8 for example

The "High Power" 6 Speed Automatic puts out 212 HP
The "High Power" 6 Speed Manual puts out 231-237 in USDM applications, and 255 in JDM

The "Standard Power" 4 Speed Automatic puts out 189 HP
The "Standard Power" 5 Speed Manual puts out 192 HP

And on top of that, the 6 speed automatic wasn't even available in US until 2006, so until them, the 6 speed manual was roughly 42-48 HP more powerful than the only available automatic model, and the 5 speed manual was slightly higher powered as well, but the latter difference is neglegible.

The specs that Anthony posted are pretty accurate. Although in 82 Honda bumped up the compression on the EK1 to 8.8:1 from the previous 8.0:1. Also the 82's had a few more horsepower from my understanding with 75 instead of the 72. But I think the 81's might have 75hp also (due to changing the exhaust port layout from a 2-port head to the 4-port head). Not sure on that though...
Badmofo's right about the RX-8. My ex has an 04 RX-8 and the 4 spd auto (what she has) came with 198hp, whereas the 6 spd manual came with 238hp. A full 40hp increase from the slush box tranny-equipped ones...
