i installed a drag kit on my h23. I was told to run it only a little above idle to get on trailer to have exhaust work done(having it tuned with hondata s300 after exhaust work). MY question is this.....Before I installed turbo kit, car started on a dime. Now I have kit installed with only a downpipe and it takes FOREVER for the motor to crank. It just turns over 10-25 times before actually starting. Is this normal due to some vaccum difference or exhaust issue before tuning?

I would like to add that in the middle of the install I had back surgery and the car sat for 6 months. The only issue there is bad fuel, but the car was garaged in moderate temperature and humidity. I might be wrong, but i dont think my issue is gas.

Thanks - devon

after sitting for so long, it WOULD be a good idea to put fresh oil, gas, and plugs in, so you can be certain they're in good condition.

is your battery in good condition? how bout alternator?

open downpipe shouldn't have any effect on it starting up; i drove like 40 miiles the other day on an open downpipe to get a new one made. no problems.
as long as you have your wastegate, bov, and boost gauge hooked up correctly, vaccuum lines shouldn't be a problemo.

what are the specs of the kit?
did you put bigger injectors in?
new fuel pump?
new ecu?

was the hondata S300 hooked up when you attempted to crank it? What's your current injector size? The fuel trim can be incredibly rich, making it harder to start up. That was my problem when i first switched to s300, just WAY too rich.

okay....
hondata not hooked up....just done with basic turbo kit install and still have stock p14 ecu.

no issues with battery, alternator, or starter. All are new and have new grounds to them. If I had a problem there I wouldnt be able to turn car over that many times.

i put a new walbro 255 fuel pump in and I can hear it kicking in upon turning ignition switch.(Ill stop here and mention that someone on another forum said that is my problem, that when you put in a 255 fuel pump you have to upgrade injectors. I would think the worst that could happen there is to "flood" the cylinders quicker due to the extra fuel pressure, but WOULD that cause me to not start for so long???? Then again, that is really the only "addition" Ive done besides the turbo kit itself.....)

I have everything else waiting to be put in before my tune:
1000cc injectors
hondata s300 in p13
plx m300 wideband 02
SVE 3 bar map
greddy profec b spec II

but Im not sure if i fix this problem now or if it will be taken care of in the tune. Trying to figure out whats going
on.

If helpful.......turbo kit is basic drag kit
turbonetics t3/t4
delta wastegate
blitz BOV
etc, etc...

i'm gonna hafta agree w/ the guy on the other board: i'm pretty sure you have to put the bigger injectors in if you already put the pump in.
i think the stock injectors aren't supplying enough fuel for it to start up cuz they're too small.

i would throw them in right now if i was you. hopefully that solves it.
even tho they're 1000cc, you wont be running them anywhere CLOSE to their max duty cycle, so if it does start up and you go drive it, the gas mileage wont be COMPLETELY horrible

Bigger fuel pump isn't going to REQUIRE bigger injectors. All it does is send fuel to the fuel rail faster than stock. It is limited by the injectors themselves. How much boost are you going to be pushing cause 1000cc's is probably overkill if you're only going 10psi. From what i heard, they're a bit picky at idle but if you're boosting 20+, 1000cc's should be just fine. Wire in everything just to get it over with. The starting issue, I would think, is mostly because of old gas. If you got a low tank, good, get a gas tank and fill it with premium, don't tune at all till you're positive all the old gas has been used up.

didnt think it would be injectors

I had a guy come look at the gas and he took one wiff and said it was definately bad. I got some fresh gas to look at and smell and the old gas was much more yellow and WAY more potent smelling than the new gas. He said when gas sits, it turns to almost what amounts to a shiny, potent smelling "shellac". He is pretty confident that is what is causing me to not start like it should.

Im going to drain ALL 15 gallons of gas and put in 5 gallons fresh with stabilizer and injector conditioner. Im also going to change out the fuel filter. We'll se from there.

(BTW......I am going with 1000cc because im looking to run around 20psi. Its bored out 20 over with darton sleeves pressed in, je 9:1 pistons, and crower rods.)

bored 20 over? 20 what? my sleeved block is bored 2mm over and i sure as hell know it ain't 20mm cuz that'll mean sleeve-less..

you are correct; a 20mm bore over stock does not exist(I would have thought that was obvious). Bored over 20,40,60, etc. is a general term that is used for the cubic capacity of the motor. If you want to talk about my sleeves, well then yes they are .5mm larger than stock(so 87.5mm respectively).

For what its worth, I bought an 89 Silverado with a 5.7 TBI years back that hadn't been started in 5+ years. It sat in the guy's driveway collecting dust. After I changed the battery and such, it fired up on the first try and had over half a tank of gas in it. I drove that tank till it was empty and never once did I have any problems with the prehistoric gas.
