I found a bottom end kit that includes pistons, rings, connecting rods and all hardware included in rebuilding. My question is not about the kit, but the rings they include with the kit. They are called Plasmamoly rings. They really don't go into detail about them and I am interested if anyone else has used these rings? (this for a b21a1 by they way)

Hell no, dont use those included rings.
Use genuine Honda piston rings. Softest.

You have a link to this kit? i wanna see!! :D
I'm planning myself, when i get a DD car to rebuild my b21.

Okay, I have'nt made enough posts to give you a link. But, its importperformanceparts.net

look under Honda, and scroll down to the engine horsepower kits. From there HP is the first link. After you get there the B21a1 kit is on the bottom #19. Looks like a good deal. The site offers lots of good aftermarket parts and I used them when i built my b18b turbo motor.

I believe all Honda rings are chrome moly. Im not so sure what to make out of plasma spayed moly rings...i dunno if the FRM will be too kind to extra strength rings...

Are you planning on eliminating the FRM and do a resleeving? Turbo huh?

I have been considering the possiblity in case the b18b swap goes in the tank. I like to check out all possible builds and then take the path least traveled!

The B18 swap will take you back some. There are many out there who already have completed the job and loved it... more work then you'd think though.

Just save your money and go H22... it's about 3500 if you do all the work yourself (most of it actually)

Remember not all forged pistons love FRM

Hey, Prelude13! Just for kicks what is all involved in resleeving the b21.:hmmmm2:

^^Not too sure. Not many people are that devoted to resleeve a b21 fully, eliminating the FRM. I know of one person on preludepower that has done a fully AEBS resleeve of their b21.

FYI: make sure when you send your block off to the shop to get honed, that the shop has the correct grit stone to do the job. There is a special procedure for this block(FRM), which is found on the online Helms manual.

thanks, I apreciate your help. Any chance you know what GRIT that stone is supposed to be? My local speedshop is used to american engines and proly wouldnt look it up if they could.

600 i believe.
Remember, there is a special process.
Im no machinist, but you MUST be extra careful you choose the right shop to do the work, preferably a shop that can verify that they have the stone and have experience with other Honda motors, such as the h23 and h22 which also feature FRM(but not as much as the b21a1).

On average, two out of three b21's, the FRM material still shows the factory crosshatching(Yes, it's that muthafking strong!).
If yours is okay, just hone. If it's deeply messed up, then bore.

~I think 0.025" over is the most you can bore the block as well. Dont quote me on that.

Am i correct in the belief that FRM wont handle boost? If so I think im just gonna build this motor n/a and find another ride stick my b18b in. Don't want that beast to go to waste!:burnout:

Yes and no.
FRM is not too friendly on boost, not because it cant handle it. It's because the FRM will chew up the piston rings, eat up the lands and spit it out in the oil pan. --sorry to be so graphic.

Your best bet, source yourself a jdm b20a or b20a5 and go boost happy.
If you want to rebuild the b21a1, i really, really give you mad props on saving a classic, rare, hated, misunderstood, pioneering, experimental, F1 designed (insert adjective here) Honda motor.
I'll be joining you soon on the b21a1 rebuild. Once i get a DD car, that is.

...

Stick the b18b in a Civic bubble, ls/vtec that bad boy and you'll create much, much havoc on the tarmac. :yo:

Sounds like a plan. Thanks for a lot of good advice, and we'll try keep the b21 legacy kickin strong!
