Hi. I am new to the preludes, however, i have worked on and owned several honda/acura products. I have done some research about my '90 SI and quite frankly im not happy with the overall potential of the b21a1. I decieded to look into a turbo B18b build. The two setup don't look entirely different (I also own a 97 acura integra LS) and i think it would produce good results. Any body have any ideas why or why i shouldn't proceed with this swap?

first of all, welcome

second, dont be disappointed w/ the 3rd gen. this dude tony baker has like a 450hp turbo'd 3rd gen that kicks the ass' of almost anything it encounters. idk if its a b18 or original b21, but i'm sure some of the 3rd gen guru's on this site would know

dont be sad

I appreciate the sentiment. I agree that there is potential with these engines, however, the downfall of the piston rings is kinda leery. I really do like these ludes and i would definitly say it is the funnest honda i've drove yet(except the S2000). I wont count out the idea of building the b21a1, but I do like the numbers i produced on my 92 teggy(turbo b18b).

the only down side really to my B21 is that the availability of parts is not as great as other B series motors like the B18 and B16, so a lot of stuff like turbo kits have to be custom, but im not dissapointed with mine at all, it has a rebuilt B21A1, nothing too special, but i can hang with EK Civic Sis and LS teggys all day long... I dont know if it's true or not but i've heard that the B21A1 and B20A5 are both very boost friendly, and i plan on finding this out on my own in the near future!!

well congrats on the purchase

but i must chime in my two cents here.... if you drop in a B18 into your lude congrats.... cus you would be the first one that ive heard of being done.... motor mounts dont line up.... the only swap that ive seen done with these cars is the H22/23..... but good luck and more power to ya if you get it done... id say document and take pix of everything cus you will have MAD PROPS!!!

thanks uncle buck. I've not been one to let a little fab work stand in my way. I am still in the research phase of this project, will continue to keep all updated as to what i will find.

well the H22 swap has been notorious swap for the 3rd gens.... me i was just gonna buy the H22 motor mounts, then build a F22... throw a 16g on it and crank out 20lbs of boost (it will hold up to 25) on steel sleeves.... not to mention by the time you piece it all together you will still look at half the price of a H22 swap

Hey, nice purchase!

...i had an Integra myself, 1994 Ls. They are nice cars, the b18b is a great motor, that has massive potential. So many options with a b18b. Ls/vtec, bolt on turbo kits...yada yada...

I miss my first car sometimes.

The main thing about other B series motor swaps is the transmission. Going from cable to hyraudlic is a custom job, along with fitting in the motor with custom made mounts, or course. I dunno, i kinda dislike other b series motor in a Prelude. It's kinda off-karma, ya know?

Either way, you and I both still are rocking the b21a1, "Bastard motor." Take care of it, do timely oil changes, this is a must. Consider doing 2000 mile oil change intervals. Trust me.

If I remeber correctly the B18a trannies will bolt up to a b18b, and the b18a tranny is a cable clutch. Motor mounts are an issue and i am still researching between the two. I am basing the most of my studies off of my 97 integra. Custom motor mounts may be required but the orientation inside the engine bay are the same. I haven't applied all the motor mount possibilites yet but once I do I will have a starting point. I do know that a custom setup for the distributer will have to be done, and i will need to buy the harness to go to obd 2. Other then that I just have to decide if a turbo is really what I want. I have found many parts to build the b21a1 n/a, not gonna turn the same numbers but it is a completly different set of numbers.

Sounds good.
Remember, the b21a1 is a very sensitive motor.
Try to use, a lot of OEM parts. Especially, OEM Honda piston rings.
They are the softest.
...
If you are gonna add force induction, the b21a1(resleeved, eliminated FRM) &/or b20a(5) will double its horspower and torque.
(Thanks Bobnova)
These motors, some come to believe, where supposed to be turbocharged from the factory ala F1 motor design.

TonyB has an amazing machine. He used to be at 350whp with no intercooler and it was daily driven. Then he upgraded to a FMIC, got of the meth and onto race fuel....

He's finished with the new "fresh" motor now and is aiming for 400whp on pump.

He's on stock sleeves from the B20A5.

The 3rd gen prelude has huge potential, don't let anyone tell you other wise. The B21, though not being the greatest bastard B series, has plenty of potential. The rings aren't a big deal actually, the stock FRM sleeves are very strong. You can always sleeve the block for a much better platform.

Now moving on to the smaller, yet more efficient B20A?. Being a "downgrade" from the B21, it has less hp and tq out of the box.... though it's willing to make sweet sweet NA love and also loves the boost and juice.

The stock B20A? is very strong. Comes with iron sleeves, incredibly strong rods (which can be swapped for H23 for an even stronger application) Pistons can be used from most other B series (except the B21 and B20B/Z) slight modification maybe needed on the wrist pin.

There are a few members on my fav lude site that are over 150whp with out a damn tune!!!! NUTS! And they're still on a turd sized 2" collector!!!! Even worse!!!

Now onto the boost!!! There are numerous amount of boosted B20A fellas on pp.com.

Juice... well here is another thing our engines (b20) can handle very well. I ran a 75 shot of wet juice for a very long time and never had an issue do to it.

I went with a complete rebuild, pistons, rods, built head (p n p, cams, better valvetrain, port matched to my header, ported and polished intake manifold, larger TB and full bolt ons) all on a 9:1 comp setup and wow did the work make a huge difference. My plans were to boost the living crap out of the B20. But I got the H22 bug and sold most of it off.

Now that you read all of this. Buy a B20A (JDM) remove your manifolds and install them on the B20A and drive around like that. It's much much better uptop then the B21. On a mild build I would eat minme swapped EF's and some B16 coupes..... On juice I hung with some of the better builds out there.... on boost... well look at B20luda or TonyBaker12.
