Thanks, TopEndLube !!
Just bought it.
Come from Motorcycles (my prize possession is an '82 Honda CX500 TURBO) and my son is into CIVIC's & CRX's. I just SO understand Honda's !
So my '89 Prelude gives me the car I've wanted for so long AND a way "in" to talk with my son.
I'm really surprised my CHILTON's manual won't tell me what plugs I need and I'm actually embarrassed to ask on this forum.......

bump again to help him out. That is cool that your son is into civics and crx's. Just let him know that the lude is the big brother for the civics and crx's.

oh! talk to David(91hondalude) on here. He should know what they use.

the dealerships here in louisville ky recommend NGK plugs

GOLDJUMP

They cleaned up nicely.
Gap is at .045 and the Chiltons manual says do not re-gap platinum plugs.

This is not to say I'm dilemma-free.
Still don't know if they are the correct plugs.

Also, I'm looking to get a new cylinder head.
My son has an ECU from a B16 VTEC that he says ought to be compatible if I'm able to get a used VTEC head.
I'm mainly looking at getting a used '89 stock head just to keep everything simple.
Which way would you all go, what year(s) head would be a good swap, and what kind of $$$ am I looking at ?
The previous owner toasted his timing belt and I can hear there are bent valves/stems. Maybe cheaper to get the valves re-worked ?

Just dying to get this 4WS sweetheart on the road !!

I think its cheaper to get the head redone. Also... The b series engines in the civics and integras are different from the ones in the preludes so they don't fit. The ecu won't work in your case. So I would just get the head I have fixed. It works out cheaper in the long run.

Appreciate the reply.
Hoping to get info on the platinum's since they are what I have AND performance oriented.

A vtec head was done actually by Tom Coleman. He did a b16 head swap onto a b20a block.
He mad many issues, and the main issue was oiling. Remember our motors have the gangsta lean...leans back 15degrees so the low hood line can work, Honda dubbed this, "Engineless design." Vtec drivers know, oiling is a big factor for the engagement.

You cannot swap in a b16/b18...why? why downgrade yourself with a motor that has no tq compared to a natural 2liter like the b20a? putting in a b16 into a 3g Lude will change the cars personality drastically. Imagine hitting the corners in the Prelude and all of a sudden your exit speed is reduced b/c you are stuck revving sky high to move the car.

Remember* Tq is what gets you moving, Hp is how much work can be done, faster. Personally, if you can find a low mileage b21a1, get that. People will yell and moan about the oil burning issues.

Your only realistic swap is the JDM b20a. A direct swap, reuse all manifolds, sensors and ECU whether you have the pk2 or pk3 it'll work fine. Forget the p75 or whatever nonsense Integra ECU. If you're obd1, get a PK3. And best of luck finding a JDM b20a.

:D

Thanks for the excellent info !!
Gonna pull the head for now and see what I got.
Have some good "Old-School" NASCAR type buddies that will help take a look.
Bringing my metric tools to pull everything myself.

May be posting for valve seat / stem specs in the near future.
I know they can turn and lap every and anything, just want to be able to give them the numbers.

Just to let you know, they have a complete rebuild kit for the b20a5 motor.

Here is a few links i found:
http://www.hi-performance.com/ImportRebuildKits.htm#Honda4Cylinder

http://www.rpmrons.com/Hondakits.html

I also remember Jasper engines used to make a fine kit for the b21a1, removing the FRM sleeves...too bad they dont make that kit anymore:mad: so im sure if you can call them and talk to them, they should have a kit for the b20a5.

best of luck, keep us posted and bring your 4ws baby back to life!!

Could you be more vague ?;)
The plugs in there now are platinum and they gap good / clean. But I don't want to spend more than I need to when they "**** the bed" so I will be looking at NGK's then.

Do you know that spark plugs actually shunt heat from the cylinder ?

Reason why I said platinums are a waste is because they last a long ass time.... but between now and when they are no good..... well they'd be filled with carbon.

Plus they wont add performance unless you're really really built.
