Removing back window tint

Hey guys!

I want to change my tint when I get my rims. The only way I know how to remove the tint without messing up the windows is to heat up the class and then gently remove the tint very slowly. Its tedeous and long process I know. What I want to know is, When I remove the tint from the back window will it f' up my defroster? I need my defroster for those hastey getways when females get on my nerves:p j/k. Naw but for real, What are my chances of messing the defrosters up?

It's damn tough i can say.
My Lude didnt have tints, but the previous owner was in the service. He had an ARMY DECAL, some University decal, i think it was EMORY, or Johns Hopkins...nevertheless i did F up the defroster lines trying to remove the decals. Now only 2 rows work! :mad:

Your best bet is doing it slowly, dedicate an entire afternoon to remove the tint. Afterward, you're going to have the sticky residue left on the glass. They sell this spray called, "goo-off" or 3m decal remover. That stuff works well.

Or you can say Forget this and get an entire rear glass panel. Probably a new glass would be the same price to remove the tints from a shop(I was quoted $170. to remove tints on my moms Maxima. A new rear glass costs $225.).

Also, they have a defroster repair kit. I bought this and it's a royal pain to use.

ok this gets fun i tint windows at my job (with alot of other things) pull the tint on a warm day if there is adhesive left over use a YELLOW or WHITE scotch pad (no other colors) and windex or soapy water it will rub off with some scrubbing and will not harm your defroster....good luck!

I was removing my tint the other day. I started off by ripping off all the tint.
The residue from the tint was still left on the window, so i took a rag and started scrubbing. Finally I got tired of it and graped some Spot Shot Carpet Cleaner. I sprayed it on my rag then wiped in all over my window. I let it set, then wipe it clean off. WORKS PERFECT

The steps are to take a black trash bag, and then cut it so that it lays flat and will cover your rear window.

Then take soapy water and cover the window. Next, lay the bag on top and smooth the bubbles out.

Then, spray an amonia and water mixture on the inside (while covering the interior with plastic) and keeping it up there with plastic wrap. After 20 - 30 mins in the sun, begin removing the tint.


I actually just did mine yesterday, and here's how it went.

I did everything they said until the wrap wouldn't stick and I just sprayed 2 layers at intervals. I started taking off the second layer under the film and it WOULD NOT PEEL!! I was so pissed. I then started to just scrape it and not worry about the defrosters (they're just metal pieces.. no wiring) and then got down to the glue. I put some amonia on a sponge and it unstuck. Then come back with some paper towels and Windex to get the glue off the window.

It's a pain in the ass.. much harder that the other 4. All in all it took me 4 hours to do the rear, and I'm not done yet. Total so far on all 5 windows was about 10 hours. Save $100 though.. whoopeee. Lol.

i'm not gonna read that article because i do this almost every day.

we use a razorblade.. plain and simple. you gotta work real hard to damage glass with a razorblade.

spray on window cleaner, use razorblade to peel sticker/tint/whatever off.. wipe up mess. if there's glue left over, use some window cleaner + steel wool to scrub it off, then wipe again. easy as pie.

That's basically what I did.. I don't think I damaged the defrosters one bit.

One more thing.. keep changing the blades (after 10 mins switch sides, then new blade). They're like 40c a piece and a new blade works 5x better than a worn one.

I tried to remove it myself, and now I dont have rear defrost. Spend the money and get it done professionally, that way , if they screw it up, they can pay for a new window.

Who knows but I was told $165 to remove the tint and another $165 to put some more on. The back tint on my 5g is starting to bubble up and everything is blurry.

Hey guys. remember.. I am a Pro Window Tinter... lol. I have tinted and replaced tint on many cars.

I will tell ya ahead of time.. Depending on the age of the tint and what material its made from. ( Metal are Plastic Dyied ) It gonna be a bitch to get off.

Dont you EVER use steel wool. This will scratch your back glass pretty bad. Just try to use a few of them scrub pads you can find in the store for dishes... You know.. the green ones. ( with out the spounge on it. )

NO.. your defrost is definitly on the outside of the glass inside the car.

Thats true. But if you doing the back glass only.. I would not use blades at all. Just Scrub pads and some degreaser.

This thread shall not die! - Waking this thread up to say I tried using just razor blades on the ****tiest tint job in the history of all mankind - previous owner I guess - anywho - read the trash bag ammonia thing. Tried it and viola - totally kicks ass. Way faster. Only caution I have is that you should have a fan going because those ammonia fumes will jack you up. I still cant smell anything but it took the crusty 1,000-year-old tint off in nice big sheets rather than having a back window full of tiny plastic slivers. Dood is supposed to re-tint in 2 weeks for lowbie price and with no air - I need all the help I can get.

Be careful. My 3G prelude had tint at one time, and some asshate removed it, along with most of the defrost lines. Now I need a new window. :(

I used the black trash bag idea on a car that i bought just to resell. The tint was 17 years old. I cut the bag to size, sprayed a mixture of 50% water 50% ammonia directly on the glass ( tint ) and then covered it with the trash bag, after about 15 minutes in the sun, the tint peeled right off. Ammonia cuts through the glue used to apply tint. That's why you're not supposed to use ammonia based window cleaners on tinted windows. Be sure and have all your doors open or you could pass out. The car i did it on was a hatch so it was pretty easy.

lol...i would have just smashed the rear windscreen, rang my insurance company and told them someone smashed my rear windscreen and they would come and put a brand new one in. and by the way the defrost lines are on top of the glass on the interior side and if u try ripping ur tint off they will break.. i know because i done it

ditto with the ammonia and water mix + garbage bag + large razor blade..
tint was probably a decade old and refused to come off...

it was quite tedious to get off.. took HOURS to carefully not hit the defroster lines....
if you can scrub with something safe as rory is saying, id TOTALLY rather have done that..

the site said undiluted ammonia.. you werent supposed to mix it with anything..
but who knows if that would have worked anyway
