View Full Version : Hesitation Problem

I got a 94 VTEC and can't figure this out. The engine hesitates sometimes when I accelerate at lower rpms. There's no engine codes, and i got a new rotor, cap, and wires. One mechanic suggested i do injection cleaning but I don't think it would help
Hesitation is usually caused by Ingition.
If it was a fuel problem you would know.. lol

dude we told you before....sounds like a timing problem. get the timing set and check the injectors. then get back to us
EDIT: sorry man. different thread. disregard the first part. but yea i think its timing. mine was doing the same thing when my timing was off

Now that i think about it, He is right.. Check the timing also.
Mine hesitated when my cap and rotor was shaved down to near nothing. It only lasted 1 year. Brand New from honda. Dawm turbo cars. lol

Thanks. I'll check the timing, but i thought the computer would advance that automatically.
Not if the Timing Belt Jumped.

That makes sense cause i just had the timing belt changed along with the head. Thanks

if the timing belt jumped a tooth, im sure that you would have bent a valve or two. check the timing and get back to us man.

Mines does the same, but i'm throwing a CEL when my car is decelerating and I have a big exhaust leak before my catalytic converter. Plus, there is a wire from my o2 sensor that is cut.
I believe my hesitation is due to my exhaust leak. The car doesn't hesitate at all when it's cold. Only when its warm.

im not sure if he threw a code....im sure he would have told us

I checked the timing belt and it's fine. There's no codes also. I could also check ignition timing but I figured it'd be ok since it should be electronically advanced.

I'm having the same problem the only difference is that the engine is hesitant when im at a stop it only drops the rpm by a tad and then goes back to where the rpm's are suppose to be at basically the cars seems like it's going to stall on me. I'm taking it to the shop tomorrow and hope it's not the freakin timing belt dammit!! I'll keep you posted on what my findings are. I just hope it's not the timing belt dammit!!

Thread starter and 'Celo, try cleaning out your IAC valve with carb cleaner;
Chances are, it's full of carbon which gives you hesitation and bouncy idle.

I'll give that a shot B thanks man hey where's the IAC valve is it next to the egr valve?? I'll try that tonight bro thanks alot man!! I was starting to **** bricks cause i thought it was the timing belt i thought i had to buy another H23 Engine phew your da man B. Thanks bro!!

The IAC(Idle Air Control) valve is located on the throttle body as in the pic above.
For an H23, it should be towards the side.
I believe it's two, 10MM bolts you undo and undo both coolant lines. Be gentle and remove the lines carefully, do not tear them.
Have a rag handy for minor coolant leakage when removing the lines and IAC unit itself.
When you remove the unit, behind it is a metal screen, perhaps 2 of them.
Use "CARB" not TB cleaner(Carb cleaner is way softer) to clean out all of the carbon that has been built up over the years. You'll see black soot flow out. Make sure you have a rag handy. . .
I'm pretty confident 'Celo, that this will cease your bouncy idle and hesitation at low speeds.
As for the thread starter, try this.

For an H23, it should be towards the side, im not 100% sure as im more familiar with B, F and H22 motors. . .

Also be sure to reset the ecu when you are all done so the car can relearn it's new idle and figures.

As for the thread starter, try this or your distributor timing is off.

Thanks brother I'll try this tomorrow then during the day then tonight wouldn't be ideal to do then I would need alot of light to get it done so tomorrow it'll be. Thanks alot B i really appreciate the help man!!

Thanks a lot for the help. I'll try cleaning it out and then the timing. Might have to play around a bit since i don't have a timing light.

no....dont play around. and btw. the timing isnt electronically advanced persay, you have to jumper the ecu diag. hookup and then time it. adjust it by loosening the 3 12mm bolts on the dizzy (2 on top, and 1 on bottom) i beleive turning toward the front of the car is advance and toward the passenger compartment is retard. not sure on that one. but dont guess on timing. do it right and you wont have a problem. find someone with a timing light, and if you cant go to auto zone, pep boys, or advance and either buy one for 40 bucks or see if you can rent one

Ok, I'll do that. I have the service manual and it's advance twoards the passanger compartment.

what about spark plugs? couldnt that make the car hesitate if they have a ton of carbon on them?

I advanced my timing a bit and it's running better. Didn't do it since. To answer the spark plug question I think they could cause that also but I just had mine changed.

its not very likely but yes. mostly it will be poor fuel comsumption and very few times will the car not start.
when you change the spark plugs, get something to clean the combustion chamber. it will not only be a partial tune up but it will give you better gas mileage and fuel consumption.

Ok this is what I found out about my issue I was having well what i found out for now that is. I went to my mechanic to see what he said about my problem he said it could be my spark plug wires my cap and my rotor, he said to replace all that and the hesitation should go away. So I went to my brother's crib cause he had an extra cap laying around and all i needed to buy was the rotor and the spark plug wires which i couldn't find anyone that had in stock some freakin msd 8.5mm wires dammit to hell. Any who got to my brother's crib and took the cap off the rotor was worn the hell out the cap was fine it looked brand new!! Once we changed the rotor and put everything back together the car was running better. Now I ordered the msd. wires online they should be here by wed. the latest and I have to change those and the spark plugs and the hesitation should go away...i hope but I'll keep ya posted peoples.
Also "B" I checked the IAC valve I need to clean it and it was at the place where you showed in the pic. Thanks bro I got it out but i couldn't take off the hose so i'm going to get some tools (cause i dont have that many) at autozone or something and get that bish out!!

I heard about that, but could you tell me what to use to clean it.

You can use brake cleaner to clean the IACV.
