First, try changing brands of gas and use a higher octane.
See if that cures it, it should temporarily.
Ping'ing noise can be a lot of things:
Have you advance the timing/retard?
Done a tuneup lately?

midgrade is the lowest i would go...thats only because gas is so high right now...when it comes down a little i will go back to premium...but put a tank of either premium or mid grade in and see if that solves the problem

So is it "pinging" or "valves tapping?"
If it's valves tapping, then you must get a valve clearance/adjustment.

yea one thing i've noticed back in the day when i had my si was how it sounded sometimes with different gas. The ludes don't say Premium unleaded for nothing. If I ever ran anything under 91 I would hear that pinging your speaking of. Yes gas is high, but still use the premium and it will even help your gas milage a little (myth?>haha) Anyhow like P-13 said too try better gas and even give your Pre some love. Get her new plugs/wires etc. They love tune-ups. And (incase your one of these people) don't sit there and beat the piss out of her at every red light or every Civ-sh!t that comes by. Granny shift around 3 3500k and save the love for the weekend or the track. Trust me she'll love you long time. hahah.
tune up tips
Honestly oil does alot. I've aways used 4 Royal Purples with 1 Lucas stabilizer and my car never made a weird noise and it stayed cool to the touch on track days. I'm going to try Lucas's new line of performance oil this summer tho. Has far has a filter the Honda OEM filter has a bigger pickup then most after market ones and cost less. NGK Plus and Wires work find n dandy. I never could actually tell the diffrence between them and MSD. Like you would anyway.
Good luck with your girl....

not being a ass but seriously bro this is what i tell females. Engine oil is vital and one of the most important parts of any engine. Upgrade to something better. And for all you who think oil is oil shame on you. Don't make me crack out a story about the summer of 05 when I did a comparison with 4qts RP and 1qt Lucas stabilizer vs 5 qts Wolfhead.. I felt so bad for my old H23 that day.....

Its most likely not his oil but just throwing a tip in there about good oil. Saves the motor and keeps her cooler...
maybe he should do a compression test and have someone adjust his valves. could make a world of diffrence... how many miles are on your car and do you beat it alot?

oh eah oil is def important nothing but the best for my cars i use mobil one synthetic in my cars. the reason i asked buase if he was using a heavy wieght and if it was cold it might tap on start up because the oil had not got up there yet.

waltrupp1988

its more like a ticking sound. it diff sounds like it coming from under the valve cover its only really heard when the car is warmed up. it not too loud but loud enough to hear it inside the car

check your valve clearances and adjust as needed. If you need help check out the helms manual sticked at the top of the forth gen forum. if that doesn't give you what the clearances should be then get you a prelude repair manual. I 100% sure they are in the manual because I've had that problem before.
