Me and a friend were arguing about this forever. About whether its possible to install an Vtec system on an 3rd gen. prelude...

What do you mean?
like using a vtec head with your b20aX/b21a1 block?
...someone tried, or should i say, "attempted" to do to this.
It didn't work & and will not work.
So your answer is: :no1:
what kind of 3g you got? welcome to the board.

Oh come on Brian i know you've heard about the Vtec B20As and B21, but it takes some modifacations, there was a guy who was making the conversion heads for it but he's not any more but the B16 Vtec head can work on the B20As and B21s
here's the link the first part of it is just him lettin everyone know that he's not selling the convo kits anymore but scroll down because he kinda gives a step by step and there's pictures!! >> http://web.archive.org/web/20030224223108/ludespeed.com/products/prelude/articles/vtec/

Meh.
That's way too much work IMO.
I dont got time for that noise!
Of course i've heard of the conversion, but for real, it's just a hassle...
Quote:
The VTEC conversion is no longer being offered. It seems to be too complicated for the average enthusiast to install and tune correctly. It also did not make as much power as expected with the stock cams. This conversion is totally possible but I don't feel that it is a good value. The time and labor to install the correct pistons and the head itself are very complicated. When you consider that you have to spend several hundred more dollars on cam gears and cams, it does not seem worth it to me. The turbo kit is something that is easy to install, you don't have to open up the motor and it works well from the beginning. So I feel that is a far better value.
If you really want Vtak, you must do like me and order a set of h22 mounts from AZ Race.

Dont worry man.
I will take you with me to h22 land were "we" Ferrari look-a-like vehicles will rule the tarmac with great authority and respect.
...hahaha...i've been reading some Descartes this week, im on a philosophy tip lately ROFL!
So here is a run down of the possible Vtec swaps that have been attempted(that i read about):
B16 on a b20a block.
k20 in a ba4 chassis.
(Owner ditched the project, didnt work...oil pan and hood issues).
...though there is one surfacing on Absolute Prelude.com(so Qnz92lude tells me)
CrvVtec/B20Z w.vtec head
Some kat in Europe did it. Must've cost him massive $$.
H22 in 3g Prelude.
AH YES.

I rememeber when a guy on another prelude site swapped the K20A into a yellow Lude... I am not sure if he finished it.
gearhead3g
01-30-2007, 03:28 PM
he never finished it. the tranny was hitting the fender well and he didnt want to cut the enginebay up. so yea he got it in but he never got it running.
on another prelude site one guy has made custom mounts to fit a b20b from a crv in his lude. it runs and everything so if someone else wanted to do that they could do the crvtec hybrid and make some nasty power.
and if htis has been covered before my bad but a b18 will fit but it sits so low that even on stock suspension the oil pan scraps on everyting. so if this interests you all youll be best off with a short oil pan

I should be getting my mounts soon.
WTF is taking AZ Race so long?!
. . .
patience is the key.
I saw pics of the h22 mounted in a lowered Prelude on pp.com. I have to say it's very low and the crank pulley is extremely close to the radius rod.
Nevertheless, again and again, the route that im taking is the most efficient way to VTAK a 3g. :yo:
edit: i remember that 3g with a k20. Yes that guy ditched it lol. He made one post and never returned.

What I can u about the H22 swap is the best to go thou but I know dat the motor is heavy plus the 3rd gen is already like a bump acutaly can break the oil pan is there sum kind of cover to protect the oil pan?
Uncle Buck

Looking at other member pics at Preludepower.com, i did notice that the oil pan and transmission sits really low to the ground, especially on a lowered 3g. The crank pulley belt is also about less than .5 iches away from the radius rod. This is a concern.
Hammer away a little i suppose?
I know one can get a reinforced and shallow mounted oil pan, so that eliminates that problem.
The motor itself(h22), is only about 40-60lbs heavier if i recall correctly. I remember a thread waaaaaaaay back in the day when a member, afterburners' weighed both b21 and h22. Not much in difference. Just in size meaning vertical length.
When i spoke to Sean(h22 mounts manager), he told me i may have to hammer a way a little at the hood so when the h22 motor rocks from acceleration, it wont hit the hood. One of the many things we talked about after our 1 hour and 30 min conversation LOL!!!

Yeah but dat problem can fixed but the b20/vtec Im just curious about gettin into

02-07-2007, 09:41 PM
You mean the b20b/vtec?
or the b20a block with the b16 head?
from what i know, it can be done.
A world of hassle in my opinion.
You're taking a block that cant go past 7k with a head that must go past 7k RPM to make power.
That combo, equals=Disaster.

yeah the weight difference for the H22 isn't as much as everyone makes it out to be, but the oil pan does sit mad low to the ground, my buddy has a h22a in his EG hatch and he just hammered the oil pan in some for a quick fix, but you can always spend the $$$ and go dry sump and not have to worry about any clearence issues

To answer the original question, I know a bloke who put a B18C VTEC (Type R) head on a B20A in a DA9 Integra. **fumbles around for pic**
