View Full Version : Trunk makes popping noise...

So I just purchased a 2001 Honda Prelude yesterday, and I've got to say it's a pretty sweet ride so far...

Now for the main purpose of this thread. I have noticed on the inside of the trunk lid that there are two metal bars that connect the sides of it together (the two curved L-shaped pieces...I don't know what they are called), but these two metal bars knock against each other when opening and closing the trunk. Is this a common problem? Is there any way to fix it? Please let me know if I'm being unclear and I will see about taking a pic of it.

Thanks,
Made

There's a little black clip that holds them there. It sounds like it's broken out. That's what mine did. In the end I pulled the torsion bars out, and retro fitted a pair of gas struts to the trunk hinges.

Colin got it - those are your trunk tension bars and when the clip breaks on that holds them in place they will knock together. Unfortunately I don't know of an easy fix for this, other then getting a new clip and trying to get it back into place. Those tension bars are a B!TCH to mess with, so be careful. My buddy was messing with mine and one flew off and hit him in the face, almost broke his nose and bloodied his face up pretty bad

Ouch, yeah those can be a beast to work on, most of the time people put in aftermarket speakers in the rear deck and the new speakers have a greater mounting depth and the trunk tension bars get in the way so maybe they were disconnected by the previous owner, I would ask Brash22 what size hydraulic cylinder he used that would be a nice mod.

Thanks for the replies...I wasn't sure if I was the only one with this problem...looks like I'm not alone. Well as the old saying goes..."If it's not broken, don't fix it." Knowing me, I would just screw it up worse than it already is.

Thanks for the help though.

Well if you don't have the springs on the truck lid, could make for a painful wack in the back of the head or back, if you have to lean in to grab something out and that thing comes crashing down.

So it may be broke so you might want to look at that a little closer.

Well it's this black retaining clip that's the issue i'm sure...I can put the black tension bar in and snap the black retainer closed, but once I shut the trunk, it will pop right back out. Here's a pic...
