So my car is currently burning rich, which I think is due to a leak in the header/downpipe. I do plan on fixing it but for now... I get a thick soot of carbon deposit on my rear bumper and trunk that's very hard to clean off. I've cleaning it using Meguiar's car wash, simple green and dish soap. I can get most of it off but not all of it. Does anyone have a suggestion of some miracle product that will easily take it off?

you still got a cat too right? cause that will help with preventing it, the soot is caused by CO in the exhaust stream which along with HC and NOX is what your converter is supposed to turn into CO2.
As for cleaning a clay bar like yogi said should do it, or Id probably just keep buffing at it and use a polishing compound. After its cleaned just try to keep it clean and waxed; it will make it easier for the future.

I went and bought Meguiar's clay bar and am trying to clean it. It does seem to be taking some of it off but it's not coming off easy or anything. I let you know how it turns out.

DON'T TRY THIS UNTIL SOMEONE KNOWLEDGEABLE SAYS IT WOULD WORK!!!

But I'm thinking, Throttle body/ carb cleaner, just a quick shot. I'm just not sure if that will hurt the paint or not.

thats what i was thinking ocean
i saved a piece of my bumper, but i dont think i have any TB cleaner, sounds pretty harsh for paint, i say fix the problem, dont keep trying to keep it clean.

Why don't you try taking the bumper off?

Take the bumper off until the problem is fixed? Sounds good! Or maybe put on one of those after market bumpers, how about that Spider bumper? And I'll just have the bumper painter black to match my tires and trim and stuff. That would look dope, and you wouldn't even notice that the bumper had black **** on it.

or you could be like one of those cool guys in a mustang and just cut the exhaust off around the middle of the car and have it point straight down. might wanna cut the sleeves off your flanel shirt first though...

3m fine cut rubbing compound. it's clearcoat safe. I use it two-three times a year to remove all the wax and deposits and start fresh.

If they clay bar didn't woke all the way time for the 3m fine. Just hope that the soot wasn't hot and burned into it or anything like that.

dont use any kind of throttle body cleaner or brake cleaner on it....

the easiest way and cheapest way to get it off with hardly any work at all is to go inside look under your sink and get a can of comet or ajax, you know that powder bathroom cleaner stuff and that will take it right off just wet the bumper down sprinkle some of that stuff on it and wipe it down with a washcloth and it should come right off, and it wont hurt the paint any, i used to have to do it all the time...
