View Full Version : Raffle for charity?

What do you guys think about having a raffle?
I'm thinking if we were to do it, I'd make a video of the drawing, and then post it up here. But if we did a raffle, what would we do it for? I'm thinking something we could sell tickets for no more than $2 like a Meguiar's Detail Kit or a case of oil of the winner's choice. It'd also come with 2 PZ stickers and a lanyard. The money will be saved for charity around christmas time. In the mod section, we've discussed taking donations and sending them to various charities in the name of "The Members of Preludezone.com." It wouldn't be for tax write-offs or anything, just simply out of the goodness of our hearts from the people who are able and do donate something. I've never seen another car forum do that, and it'd say a lot about the members here. The charities we'd donate to would be decided once we had the money, and divide it up in fair shares based on how much is gathered, then have a poll and let yall vote on where it goes. The staff is really leaning towards children's charities like St. Judes Hospital and Make-A-Wish. Other considerations are animal shelters and homeless.
But anyway, how many people are interested in doing this and what would you be interested in doing it for?

Edit: Be sure to vote on where we should get the parts store gift card from HERE (http://preludezone.com/showthread.php?t=10790)

I am definitely for it. I'd like to see the donations go to benefit St. Jude's Children. Christmas time would be perfect. all to donator could submit a pic of them with their ride with their "handle" and real name on it and we could submit it to whoever sends the proceeds. wherever we donate it would prob love to see a bunch of hot cars and the kind hearts that donated around the holidays. so sign me up!!

I'd like to give at least 25 to 3 different charities. I'll even go so far as to give a free lanyard to anyone who donates $10 or more to this cause. I promise the amount you donate will not be released to anybody, because I know not everyone can afford to give hundreds of dollars, but every little bit helps those who don't have anything at all, which is why we're doing this.

Count me in. I was even thinking of doing a charity car show or car wash or even a car show/wash $5 to be in the show and for $30 get a wash and wax. Have some ppl from GA,NY and other states with a good bit of ppl on PZ see who raises the most by stat. Heck 25 ppl showed up and had it as $5 entrance fee a few wash/wax that be $150 and most of us have the stuff to do it at our homes.

i like this idea a lot. i can organize one by me pretty easily i think. a friend works for the town and i'm sure if it's for charity he could make it happen.

Whatever yall want to do. Ultimately, I'll report back to you all exactly what we got, and after we decide on where to donate it all, I'll split it even 3 ways, and send the money and post up again if we get any kind of thank you card or fruit basket. I'm getting excited already. It'd be awesome if we could get $300 or more. Like I said, free lanyards to everyone who gives $10 or more.

So you're all down for donating straight up and not having any raffle?
You guys never cease to amaze me. I'd still think if we had a car care kit for raffle, it might attract new members to give $2 for a chance to win it if it's for a good cause, and the more you give, the more chances you have to win, and later in the year, we'll just start taking straight donations.
Whatever works for you guys though. I'm down for whatever.

i'd rather not do the raffle. because i'm too lazy to go send things out. but if you really want a raffle, $2 for a chance to win a car care kit? how about we up the ante and give them a $100 gift certificate to tire rack as the grand prize? i'll pick up the cost for that. or who knows... maybe i can get them to give it to us? throw in the car care kit as the second prize.

If they'd give up something like that for advertisement or something, Neon will have to deal with that.

We actually do this on another forum pretty frequently. They usually just post up one item at a time and you purchase tickets but no more then like 3-5 tickets per member per item depending on the item. So it would be one or maybe 2 items that are sperate in tickets per month.
Most items that are raffled off have been donated so the proffit would be 100% from all tickets. The member who is the winner would then pay the shipping to his or her address.
The proffit at the end of the year is then given to a charity who is selected by the members at the end of the year or the charity can be selected at the begining of the year. depending on the turn outs on the raffles more then one charity is selected.
Around my home town we do silent auctions for items donated to give to kidz 4 kidz charity, but i dont think that would work to well with a forum. :-)

they are both right. the better the prize the larger the dollar amount donated. we should look for companies that will donate. some bigger names might do it for the publicity. and i say that around thanksgiving we put up a vote for what charities to donate to.

I'll get in touch with a few sources to see if someone will donate something for us to do this. If not, I'll get a Car care kit or something universal that everyone could use.

just a thought....
instead of a tire rack gift card: how about a much needed Gas Card. anyone got any hooks with a gas company. that would make a nice prize. times are tough...

I'm more for the gas card idea than the tire rack idea. What if we don't need tires? But I say just keep it something simple.

Well, I'll get all I can. I got a number directly to the marketing manager of Turtle Wax so I might be able to get them to donate an ultimate car care kit or something. I offered them advertisement space but it'd be a banner about the size of 2.2Lude's sig pic as he sponsor for our "exterior detailing" section. I'm oping I get a positive reply from someone with a gift card though. Hopefully if this works, they will continue to do this for us for years to come. I'm fine with a little advertising as long as they contribute to the forum, especially if they help a good cause like this. Wat about auto pats stores? Where do the most of you shop? O'Reilly's, Auto Zone, Advance, Napa, etc.
Also, I think I'll make it where you can buy as many tickets as you want. Instead, what I'll do is just write everyone's names on a slip of paper, and draw from a hat. The more you buy, the more times you're in the hat. And like I said, I'll put it on video so you all know there's no favortism. Imma try to have a 2nd place prize too, but no promises.

I'm still working on this guys. I finally got a response from Turtle Wax to call someone else, so hopefully that works. I think I'm going to offer them (Assuming Neon gives the green light) a year of advertisement here for 2 wax kits, one for charity and the other for ride of the year. Being a broke college student, I won't be able to afford it this year to buy the kit myself, along with a magazine subscription. So if Turtle Wax agrees, they'll have a small banner beside exterior detailing, much like the sponsors on Honda-Tech. They may also want to post specials or promotions in sponsors corner, which will be perfectly fine.

I emailed BPi today. Hopefully he'll write back with good news.
For those of you who don't know BPi, they make the flowstack. It connects to the end of your SRI or CAI and has the same effect as the stacks on ITB's. A 4" K&N filter is also required, if you don't want to suck in any rocks. I had one on my car for a while and it accelerated so much smoother. It doesn't add any noise, but does actually help hp and torque slightly. www.bpinitiatives.com has dyno sheets. There's several members here who have one on their cars.

Sent statracing.com an email too.

GREAT NEWS!

Brian at BPi has agreed to donate to us a whole BPi assembly. It's a 100$ value which includes the flowstack, K&N filter, t-clamps, and silicone coupler. Just waiting for a green light from Neon for this.
The catch is that whoever does give us something for the charity, will have a banner on the site, discretely sponsoring a section, just like honda-tech's set-up. I feel like it's a fair trade off. I know everyone hates ads, but considering it's going up because they are contributing to the site, it's fair. Who knows, whoever else decides to help us out on this might offer discounts for members from here who buy from them.
