Maintenance Required?

OK, I may not be a noob anymore but I still have noob questions.

On the 5th gen, in the cluster, below the speedometer, it has the words "Maintenance Required" and a green square next to it, when maintenance is required, does the greed square light up or do the words "Maintenance Required", my square lights up when the head lights are on but otherwise its off, the reason Im asking is b/c the preson who had this lude before me rigged up a lot of things and well ... you can two and two together

I think the light should be on b/c my lude smokes a lot out the exhaust when either I come to a stop or turn onto a road below 20mph, sometimes it smokes a little, sometimes it smokes really bad, and sometimes it dont smoke at all, I think its my piston rings, but Im not 100% sure

Thats actually 2 questions but, hey Im a question filled guy

Im a at heart!

First off,
The maintenance required square is more of a mileage timer then anything else. It will move to orange after around 5,000 miles. It's to remind you to follow the maintinence plan in your manual. It's not hooked up to your ECU or any sort of sensor.

As for the smoke, it's not unheard of to have a 5th gen that smokes a bit, because of how rich the engine runs, and also a bit of oil burning off. However, it could be something else causing the smoke.

Hope this helps!

Sounds to me like thats your problem. I'll scan the maintinence page in my manual so you can see that until you get one.

my lude smokes sometims...all i have is a removed resonator which is prob the problem and a muffler...it smoke the same as u described above...any way since i started using better gas it hasnt been smoking or because its hot out now its harder to tell... the minatenance required light does go on when ur lights are on...and Oceanborn described it above...

green box is fine...im reading the manual about the light now so u kno...exact words..."this indicator reminds you that it is nearing 7500 miles since the last scheduled maintenance, Refer to the schedula blah blah blah. When the distance driven since the last scheduled maintenance nears 7500 miles the indicator will turn yellow. If you exceed 7500 miles it will turn red. your dealer will reset the indicator when he performs the scheduled maintenance. If someone else performs the maintenance, reset the indicator bu inserting your master key in the slot beside the indicator"

If you would like the schedule chart ill also give u that since ur without a manual...but anyway oceanborn definately said the same thing as the manual...

I don't think my little indicator box works because it always switches back and fourth between green and orange a lot. I just changed my oil and then it turned orange???

the green light will turn to orange at roughly 3750 miles, and then will turn red at 7500 miles, this is for the light to change the oil. When it turns red or whatever then u can stick a key in that little slot next to the light and it will reset to green, basically what koaomo said above ^^

I have the same problem, im burning a little more oil then usual and i have blue smoke on take offs and when the car has been running up until 15 minutes after start up. I was told valve seals, so i plan on replacing mine soon, so i would suggest that if your having the same problem as me, or i am having the same problem as you, u might wanna go ahead and do that

Does anyone know where I can get preformance heads that are already put together, (cam, valvs, rocker arms, etc) and all I have to do is bolt that baby on, taking of a head is a beotch and if Im going to take it apart I might as well just change it out

Has any one on here everhad a oil analysis done after changing there oil. On my diesel i run the oil at least 5K before i change it and then have a sample analyzied and have never had a problem, I up the total miles run by 500 after each change. The whole oil company strategy of getting you to change your oil every 3K is a thing of the past.

I read some posts, thats alot of reading. I don't really know why we have both the indicators. Check Engine and Maintenance required. Yes the little sqaure box you say is an easy reset just stick your key in that sucker (the little retangular push switch beside the indicator) and watch it turn green. Yes I do believe like mentioned earlier that thing runs off a mileage reading to remind you of getting maintenance done. Not sure how many miles that thing takes to turn but I think there are three colors that it turns Green, Yellow, and Red. I could be wrong but I swear I saw mine in the Yellow before. I don't think I have any trouble with maintenance as I have only driven my Lude 6000 miles since I bought it last year. I have already changed the oil like three times. I'm in the process of replacing all bolts and such that shows wear and tear like you know the bolts that rust up I am replacing those with stainless steel bolts. Its amazing how little of a thing like that makes the car look new again. Especially new headlights my 5th is a 97 base model but people all the time tell me theres no way that car is 11 years old.
