That doesn't sound good at all...you do know that automatic 5th gens are prone to fail right?

Dont feel bad, TL's have the exact same problem. Stupid tip-tronics. :/

Well, since your warranty expired a long time ago(you have a 98 right?) you have a few options:

1)find a working automatic transmission - which really defeats the purpose b/c it may fail again...
2)rebuild the automatic transmission so it works, well...
3)5 speed swap.

Yah man, Honda doesn't make reliable tip-tronic transmissions. 90% of the 2nd gen Acura TL's had some sort of transmission related problem...most of them were fixed through warranty...

They also made faulty 6 speed transmissions as well - RSX, Civic Si, Accord(manual) - 3rd gear pops out, which has happened to me when i was driving an RSX type S.

The Acura RSX Type-S transmission went through SO much heat and problems, and when the customers had to go back after around 30k miles to get a new transmission, Acura refused to do it under warranty or anything and made them pay for a new transmission even though it wasn't there faults (for the most part), so now there is a huge class action lawsuit against them. FROM the dealerships, they would slip 2nd and pop 3rd. I did my research on this because I almost bought one, but decided against it after seeing the issues that arose and the fact that it's pretty much 50/50 whether you will get a good or bad tranny.

5 SPEED SWAP THAT B***H!!!

SOTO, idk if you remember me from the meet sat (parked right next to you in the silver lude I think). I'm on my 3rd auto tranny and my car is a 2000. I'm looking into a tranny swap as i hear that is the best option, maybe you should too. Make sure the tranny is what's the problem though.
