Icon5 getting codes...P0301 & P1399

Hello PreludeZone.com...thanks for having me as a member and look forward to getting and providing help with these bad azz Honda's.

Moving on to my problems, I have had my '97 Prelude Base 5speed w/ 175k miles for 6 months, after getting there were no problems besides the normal suspension is old and all the other stuff that will need to be replaced that is rubber/plastic. BUT I was under the impression the motor and tranny were awesome and maintained by prior owners local Acura dealership. One month ago I got a P0301 code then a P1399 so I did the Cap, Rotor, plugs, wires, thermostat, changed the coolant, hoses, and I may be forgetting somethings...just trying to cover the basics. I still got the codes and got an O2 sensor because a buddy thought it was the problem (I know code P0420 is O2 but he was adamant) and that did NOT get the codes to go away. I do NOT take my car to a "mechanic", I am already poor so I do all the work myself and have a real deal Helm Shop manual(used by Honda/Acura)...there are a few other things in the book for the codes that I have not done...EGR, ICM, fuel filter clog/fuel pump, valves, or timing..hehe I have not checked the timing but think its good.

If you got thru that entire post...thanks for your time and if you have any imput, it would be very appriciated. Cheers and am glad to me a member.

Did you ever clear the code after you did the work?

Hey Yogi,

I did clear codes and have a OBDII reader at the house so that makes it easy. To be honest the code comes up at 3,000 RPM's while maintaining given speed in any gear...so I clear the code a lot to stop the ECU from stealing power (to save the motor from blowing up), and I do make the code pop up, then install next part (wires and plugs for instance) then attempt to get the code again, and sadly I have gotten the code after all the parts I have replaced...also the prior owner said they let the maintenance fall off a little for the last year or so. I just hate not being able to replace "whats wrong" and going through the replace everything game...Thanks again for your time and help

Ohh, my bad. This should be more exact info you wanted, this is straight from my HELM manual

P0301 = Cylinder #1 misfire Probable Causes = fuel injector/circuit, injection system, low compression, or valve clearance

P1399 (I am under the impression that the P1399 I am getting is the same as P1300...P1300 is in the HELM manual) = Random Misfire Probable Causes = ignition system, fuel supply, EGR, IAC, contaminated fuel, or lack of fuel

ya i would guess the 1300 is b/c of the 0301. I would do a compression test to see i think autozone has one you can do the loan a tool or buy one maybe $30. Its ez to do and a good thing to know anyway. Then move on to the injector. In the mean time run a bottle of STP injector clean. Might just be a dirty one Never know.

???Compression tester is only $30 and easy???, that is news to me...I have always been intimidated my the words "compression test", I have 30bucks to get that tool and do it, If the motor is bad, I might want to know that so I can get new piston, push-rods, rings, and so on...hehe. I have some bad ass fuel treatment and will use when my tank needs a $60 replenishment if and will get the compression tester...I hope I don't have to get in to the FI, so many little hoses, cutting and splicing of the injector wires, urg. I wish my buddy was right and the O2 did it. Moving on you have given me some new things to try and I am going to do fuel treatment, compression test, valve adjustment, clean EGR, check timing, and install the fuel filter I have...that is a entire other post...have you ever changed a fuel filter on a 5th generation Prelude...its hiding on the firewall midway up...very hard to get a wrench on that sucker...I think taking to motor out might make it possible.

Thanks Yogi for your help and I will get that laundry list of to-do's asap and will be back with the results...Cheers

Ill try and find the posy on how to do a compression and leak down test. until then i found this.
http://www.geocities.com/dsmgrrrl/FAQs/compression.htm

I would just put some of the fuel treatment in now any way. Most of them say up to XX so i think it would be just as good on like a 1/4 tank. I did with the STP and it was fine.

I have no photos, don't have any of those girlie's #'s, or remember much other than loads of fun...I will have to stop back through again in my life...downtown Athens by that college that's there makes for some great partying, Ohh I was driving across the country stopping by friends houses along the way...that's my random comment for the week

I will try that as well...I am just wanting my Prelude to run right. I hate it that the MIL leans power so "save" motor from detonation or whatever...safe mode sucks and it leaves my driving around with the OBDII reader clearing that damned MIL while driving...hehe. I know my car also has many miles and might need some attention when I bought it in January. Thanks to all who have taken a look at my post and I always appreciate it. Cheers!!!

t4lude98, What do you base thinking its the Knock Sensor from the RPMs? I do only have the problem @ 3,000RPMs but its not in the repair manual as a possibility...not trying to be an ass just trying to get in your head and see what that would be the problem.
