Has anyone experienced damage being done to a Honda engine that has used 10W-30 engine oil instead of the factory recommended 5W-30 oil?

I ran 10w-30 for along time and I just put two quarts of 5w-30 since my last oil change. Plan on running 5w-30 this summer to try and get a few extra miles. You can high mileage 10w and 5w oil. I want to switch to a synthetic blend after running 5w-30 for a bit but I'm kinda nervous about that on my 170k h23.

10W-30 is perfectly fine for most Southern States. The owner's manual says so itself! I think it says as long as the temperatures do not go/stay below 20 degree's F, you can run 10W-30. In other cases, run 5W-30. I bought my 2000 Prelude with 59,000 miles and I run Mobile 1 10W-30 Full Synthetic (I don't know if it is really a full synthetic, or what the old owner used, but it doesn't hurt it to switch).

I have ran 10w-30 numerous times, it doesnt hurt it or anything really. Also Walmart DOES carry Mobil1 :D and its like $3-$4 cheaper than autozone or advanced.

A family member changed from dino engine oil to full synthetic engine oil in their V8 Lexus and got a 2% gain in miles per gallon. Quote:
That is good to know!

10w-30 is fine. Synthetic oil is not needed either. Here's is a great thread on Engine oils, "Oil information and myths busted" - Oil Information and Myths busted. -download the full repair manual(located in my sig). You shouldn't be too worried about engine oil, just make sure the Prelude you are about to purchase checks out okay. Good luck! |

They say the sam thing about there gas being just like shell. Yes it does but most of the brand names have thing in the oil to help it from gumming up you engine. It ok but the cleaner a engine is the better it runs.

My car was running 5w-30 when I bought it, ran it that way for a year. It always burnt oil, sometimes up to a quart a month. I recently switched to 10w-30 and I've driven over 3000 miles without needing to add any oil.
