big problem

Ok... i was on the way home from NOPI yesterday and wen my car wanted to go into 3rd gear it kinda jumped or slipped into gear....its doin this in every gear now even reverse and i think i might even have lost my 4th gears...its jus revs really high in 3rd and seems like the cars in neutral and goes no where... is this a timing belt problem or need a new transmission problem... keep in mind i drive an automatic... i need a lot of help on finding out what this is so i kinda kno wen i go to the transmission shop tomm so they dont rip me off... all help appreciated....if u need more info jus ask

Your tranny's probably about to go. The Preludes auto tranny wasnt made that well, so it doesnt last too long. My guess is that its on its way out. but I'll let the more "seasoned" vets take a stab at it.

P.S. Uhoh...I smell...*sniff* I smell...*sniff*....is that a 5speed swap coming? Mmm...yummy.

Could be a torque converter issue. Check the fluids like ludeguy said. Remember you want to check ATF while the motor is warm and still running (unlike engine oil/manual transmission fluid). Even if it's full, you might wanna try to drain and refill. How many miles are on your car?

Sounds to me like the 3rd gear clutches aren't applying properly. In an automatic there are a couple gears, overdrive, underdrive, and reverse are all called rotating gears, 2-4, and low/reverse are called stationary gears and they all make up the planetary gear set (I know reverse is in there twice). In third gear the clutch packs lock overdrive and underdrive together, none of the holding members are applied and the entire planetary is free to spin, 3rd gear is called direct drive.

If the trans is slipping through third it could be due to worn clutch disks in the tranny, more than likely its contaminated fluid. Contaminated fluid is the number one cause of transmission failure (if they show you the pan and there are a few metal flakes in it, tiny amounts of debris is normal, don't let them rip you off! clutches wear and little particles get in the fluid) Take it to a shop, if you want to keep the auto you can get it overhauled and repaired. It doesn't sound like you've got the know-how to repair an auto tranny yourself so don't open that bitch up. If you don't wanna keep the auto do a 5spd conversion.

Yes you do smell a 5speed swap...I was waiting to graduation to get the money...but I just got back from a transmission shop and they said nothing is wrong with the tranny...I have gotten an oil change the day before and they are supose to top off all other fluid as well... this morning on the way to the tranny shop it wasn't doind wat is was the day before like it fixed its self... and I plan on doin the swap myself then having the clutch pedal and all other lil things dont by the pros jus to cut down on labor costs... but if it acts up again ill try to get a video or somethin to show you guys

looks like the gears in your auto tranny have given up...and yeah..its probably cheaper to do a 5spd swap

about the 5spd swap...will the shift knob and **** have to be changed or could i use existing one and will it align perfectly wit everything i want it to look jus like a normal 5spd wit out being to tell one bit that it was converted

no not using the auto shifter...idk how to explain so we'l keep it as a no haha...but wen i buy a manual transmission will it come with everythin i need besides the ecu? or will i need to buy other little things such as the shifter and such... i kno i need a clutch pedal.

same thing happened to me last month, and my car is still in the shop. Getting the tranny rebuilt, but I got quoted on a 5speed swap and it was way too costly.. So i decided to get it rebuilt

I was told by a tranny shop that I'm looking at around $400 dollars if i bring them all the stuff needed..... clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, throwout bearing, clutch lines, slave cylinder, master cylinder, clutch and brake pedal assembly, shifter cables, shifter and shift knob, shifter plate, ECU. They also said the main thing would be to get a kit for the inside stuff (clutch pedal, etc...). What am I missing???
