Looking at buying a 1997 SH, Help Please?

Ok so I've been looking at Prelude's for a little while now. I am getting rid of my 07 F150 and getting something better on gas. I really like the styling of the Prelude's but I don't like the price! I have found one that I like and I'm going to look at today, if you could give me any advice at all on Prelude's in general as well as this specific one, please let me know! Are these cars fairly reliable if taken care of with general maintenance? Here is some info/pics of the car I'm looking at:

Year: 1997
Type: Honda Prelude SH
Color: Green
Modifications: Megan Cat Back Exhaust, DC Sports Race Header, Short Throw Shifter, Coilover's with Camber kits installed, AEM Cold Air Intake, Tinted Windows.
Other: No known problems with the car. Radiator was replaced recently due to small leak.
Asking Price: He was asking $6,795 and told me he would do $6,400.
Mileage: 143,000

Is it stupid to pay this much for something with that high of mileage, or is this not that bad for Honda's? Will it last me if I take care of it. It will be my daily driver. If the price is too high, what do you think it's worth?

its a honda.
given that you service and maintain it like any regular other car, it'll have the reliability of, yep, you guessed it... a honda.
the SH model is gonna be fantastic for tearing up the twisties and curvey roads, but isn't too good if you wanna go forced induction like super or turbochargers.

i'd say take the car for a test drive, make sure you notice if Vtec works correctly (you'll know when ) and if you're able to, take it to a local honda dealer to have them inspect it (usually for a small price) and they'll tell you if anything is wrong with the car or anything you should look out for.

vtec engines are known to be one of the most solidly built engines period..as long as you maintain and service the car when your supposed to it will hopefully last forever. just check for leaks in the trunk and condensation in the rear lights as this could indicate if the car has been in a collision. or rust on the sills and around the sunroof or the top of the rear windscreen. if there is none then you have a very nice clean lude and its well worth considering.

reliability on honda motors isnt even worth questioning because there history is squeaky clean.

The price looks fine to me. Don't be scared by the mileage, and nice find on the tan interior!

Yeah that's right about on the mark price wise. I got my 97 with 120k on it for 6 grand. That's pretty much their going prices. Worth every penny bro.

Take it to a mechanic you trust to get it checked out though.

Well that car was a no go. The rear bumper was mis-aligned a tad where it wraps around the sides of the car and meets the rear quarter panels. Also, the driver side rear tail light had condensation in it. The trunk had some sort of white looking residue on the cargo carpet area. The paint was chipping on the rear bumper where it met the trunk. The engine light was on. In first gear, the tach would stop at 2500 until it could catch up with itself around 5500. The sunroof was a little bit leaky. Although, 5th and Reverse sounded/shifted great. There was a puddle of oil behind the valve cover on top of the intake manifold, I was guessing a valve cover gasket.

I do however have another one I found. It is a 2001 Type SH, silver exterior, all stock! It has 84,000 miles on it. I gentleman that is 61 owns it, and just retired and bought another vehicle. He is the only owner! However, he wants a pretty penny for it. He is asking 11,000, but I think I can get it for 10,000 or 10,300. We will see. It looks to be VERY well taken care of. He said the only thing that he has had done to it, was replaced the clutch in 2005. I will take a peep at it tomorrow! I'm stoked.

Dude, if you can afford that, get it... That will treat you WELL. Make sure the timing belt is done, it's recommended to replace it right around that mileage.

What about the water pump? I'm pretty sure he hasn't had it done yet, but he said he would have it done soon if he would have kept it. He has let the Honda dealer do all the service every 3000k miles since new and has records!

Yeah the timing belt and water pump and auto tensioner should all be done at the same time. From Honda you are looking at a 800-1000 dollar job, you could do it yourself if you are mechanically inclined though.

It's also not a bad idea to replace some of the seals while you have it opened... balancer shaft seals, the front main seal (if there is one there... i assume there is, since there is a rear main seal on the other side =P), and not a bad idea to replace the balancer shaft belt either.
