Help

Hey guys, greetings from Ohio.

well as you can see not only am i new to the sight but i am new to the lude....
this summer i am looking into purchasing a 5th gen prelude for under $10000, i want semi low miles, preferably black or silver and manual......

my research so far is all over the place but here is what i got....
-1999_2001, 2.2L, h22a4, 200hp/155tq, DOHC V-TEC, 0-60=6.8?, and like a fifteen minute quarter mile.

well my questions are:
-where should i look for a lude ( autotrader, craigslist,....)
-what are the safety features
- whats the top speed
- and what are the recommended mods

of course so far i want
- intake manifold
-exhaust manifold
-cb exhaust
-hondata ecu
-cam's
-short ram intake
-and a suspension system

thank you so much for the help

ebay, craigslist, auto trader. find the car where ever you can. you need to be aware of OIL consumption issues with some ludes w/ high miles. Also don't settle for an automatic. the auto trans is garbage.

ditto on the auto trannies. however i got lucky. i got one of the good ones. it seems like the majority of the bad ones have gone, and all thats left are good ones. but i'm sure there are a few hiding out there somewhere so dont take the chance.

you should have no problem trying to find one for under 10k. mine has 67k and its a 2000 and its worth just under 10k. and thats low mileage for its year. and 01 with same mileage should be right around 10k or just above. so that wont be a problem. just stay away from SH models.

15 minute qtr mile time seems a little ridiculous. its more like 15 seconds. and maybe a few tenths depending on the driver. the top speed is roughly 150. there are no real recommended mods. i mean, I/H/E wont give you much. cams or forced induction will give you some power. as for whats recommended for that, its all personal preference. just be prepared to spend some money if you want real power. IMO suspension should be your first mod. it was mine and i would never go back to change it. most luders out there will agree.

just do some research and find out what is right for you. it took me nearly 3 years to decide my final mods list. and even then i'm still changing it from time to time.

Long story short, Don't settle for anything less than what you want though. If your on Autotrader and don't find exactly what you want, then wait until you do! The Prelude is one of the greatest cars for under 30K EVER! Especially on tight corners, thats the Prelude's real strength.

But good luck and keep us updated!

You can't mod the ECU because it has the SH programs in it. And other SH compatibility issues.

The SH models are generally "harder" to find certain parts for. For instance: The exhaust/header systems are different from base, and not everyone is capable of modifying the base systems to fit on the SH.

Also, as you may not know... any type of serious power that you want to put down, you need to have your motor tuned to maximize for your modifications, and to make your car run reliably. Well... our options are limited for tuning. You need an OBD-I ecu or a stand alone engine management system to properly tune... and once you convert to OBD-I, you (and yes... this is without exception) loose any and all function of your ATTS system, and it becomes close to 100 pounds of dead weight. Your only other alternatives for tuning without switching to OBD-I is using piggyback style air fuel controllers, and they are a very inferior way of tuning for any serious mods... Also, they are limited to air and fuel ratio tuning, and have no capabilities for tuning ignition timing or anything else.

On top of all of that, even if you stay OBD-II, and tune with a piggyback controller... your ATTS unit will fail after you make a certain amount of torque (I think it's like 180 ft-lbs, or something like that... someone correct me here as I'm probably wrong), and become erratic and make your car dangerous to drive.

Basically, it comes down to the simple fact that the Type SH is much harder to turn into a fast, reliable, straight-line car... It is a beast for Auto crossing, and can be improved slightly with proper bolt ons and a piggyback controller for some tuning capability, but it simply does not have the potential to become truly "fast" without making serious custom modifications.

Actually, I hate to say this... but if you want to make a beastly straight-line racer... Preludes in general are not a good platform to do it easily...
