What kind of condition is your catalytic converter in? Might be time for a new cat, especially if it's the original one with 190k on it.

do a good tune-up: plugs, wires, fuel filter, etc etc, and run some seafoam thru the engine.

Sure... but you would most likely be throwing a code.... then again, you would most likely be throwing a check engine code if you were running too rich or too lean no matter what is the reason (there are generic codes for too rich and too lean)... which leads me to believe that your car isn't actually running too rich, it's just not filtering enough pollutants out of the exhaust... and you also probably have a good amount of carbon build up on your valves... that's just my guess though. Like I said... what condition is your catalytic converter in? 190k is a lot of miles on a OEM catalytic converter...

Also... run some sea foam (it's not a fuel additive added through your gas tank... you run it through your vacuum system (through the PCV valve... pull it from your valve cover and stick it in a small cup of it... do it a couple times... when you are done, I recommend replacing the small vacuum hose and PCV valve that you ran it through as they are pretty cheap to replace and I'm not sure what the sea foam will do to the rubber used in/on them)

Also... 97 preludes are eligible for a free emissions tune-up through any honda dealership... it goes by VIN though... one per VIN... so if your previous owner used this, you won't be able to.

Sorry to get your hopes up, but from the looks of the service bulletin, your car is no longer eligible for the free tune-up/inspection =(. There were two different inspections/tune-ups... one for cars with 50-75k, and one for cars with 75-150k... sorry if I got your hopes up =(

If you want to see the bulletin for yourself... click here and download the pdf.

an h22 with that many miles.......... it's safe to say you're going to use a lot of oil and have a lot of black on the back of the car. the rings are probably in poor shape and I'm certain the ringlands on the pistons are worn out too.

yeah i have talked to a few people and thats what they have been tellin me... but the only way to really fix that is to rebuild the engine which i don't have the time or money for right now... but i have been using penzoil high milage and it doesn't burn nearly as much as it used to

conventional oils don't leak or burn off quite as fast as synthetics. keep that in mind.

I've heard good things about this stuff as a temporary fix. It fills in slight scoring on your cylinder walls... helps with compression and blow-by. I used some at my last oil change to help out with some "piston slap" that I have until I can afford a rebuild (long time to go for tha lol).

no additive will help the ringlands.

i get a black ring on my back bumper where my exhaust dumps out, but this is mainly because she's running a little on the rich side and there's no cat. to filter anything out...
