if when vtec kicks it, it feels "weak"

the vtec solenoid is on the head of the motor, on the tranny side, and it has a green connector attached to it. unbolt the unit and spray teh screen with some carb cleaner.

download the 5th gen manual in the FAQ's and it'll tell you how to do all of this.

i think the rev limiter is what keeps you from revving past 52-55k rpm, so you dont blow the engine...and make sure you have plenty of oil, and its not burned...vtec runs off of oil and oil psr., so that is vital for it to run properly also....

Would a dirty fuel filter prevent VTEC from fully kicking in? Mine seems to surge when in VTEC?

dirty fuel filter shouldn't prevent vtec from engaging. what do you mean surge? do you mean you get a kick when vtec engages?? cuz thats normal.

It kicks in, but doesn't want to accelerate to redline....just flattens out at 52-5500, thats where for a lack of better term seem to surge up and down by a few hundred RPM.

Make sure you warm up the engine expecially on cold weather. I know most of you know this, but I had to learn the hard way. When the engine temp is below the C gauge, it won't hit VTEC and the car will top out at around 5-6k. That happened to me when I was getting out of school and didn't warm up the engine, I was like WTF is wrong. I know this might not be the problem, but its just so you know and I hope it helps.

Skunk2 makes a VTEC solenoid cap since the solenoid is kinda ugly after a few years. It's about $25.

Do you have any pics of it on the engine? I've never actually seen one installed, just pics of it for sale.

I changed the fuel filter today just because I'm wasn't sure when it was done last. (just bought this car) and I will say it was sure sh***y. Didn't seem to help.

Will check the solenoid filter next. If the solenoid is hanging up, wouldn't it throw a code?

Not necessarily, certain things can malfunction slightly without throwing a code. Did you clean your vtec solenoid yet? It's easy to do and should help

edit:n/m i just read your post and saw that you are gonna clean it soon =P

Re: vtec soleniod

Tonight I was driving my car and it was properly warmed up, the oil was changed 400 miles ago and my VTEC was not kicking in at all!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF!!!!!! also when I hit 6000 rpm it felt like a rev limiter was kicking in? It wouldnt even redline. This is like your problem but I have no vtec. Could this be my vtec solenoid is dirty? If it was a complete faliure wouldnt I get some kinda warning light? Does anyone know what could be the problem. Also my car burns a lot of oil. I was reading some forums and they said to check your oil once a week. I have to check mine everytime I get gas. Maybe this is apart of the problem? But I dont believe so.

Re: vtec solenoid

About half to one full litre of oil everytime I fill up the gas. This is not my main concern because I know why its burning so much oil but I dont have enough money to even think about fixing it :(. I have no clue why one day out of the blue my vtec would stop working all together. I think the more you love your car and treat it good the more things will break on it

Re: vtec solenoid

my vtec stopped cold turkey one day too. i pulled the solenoid off and just cleaned the little screen. just be careful when taking the gasket/ screen out of the solenoid!! i ripped mine a lil. but once i cleaned it i had no problems. it wouldnt be a bad idea to clean the screen every six months or somethin
