What year to get?

Hey guys Im new the forum but have been looking at the 5th gen preludes for a while now and have seem to come to a point where I repeatedly run across the same basic general information (specs, basic reviews, etc.)
So I was wondering if anyone could provide me with some in depth 5th gen prelude sites.

Also what year of the 5th gen would you say is the best. I have read many reviews in which manufactuer defects appear on the car esp. in the years of '97 &'98 models. Also I have read that some of the maintenance can be bad on the all years of the 5th gen and repairs are expensive can anyone comment on that.

Thanks I appreciate all the help

my 1997 has 205,983 Miles on it, what was that about defects?
haha just pullin your chain dude. it really depends on how well the car was taken car of, if you find one that was babied by a little lady for all 202 miles than thats a good choice no matter what year it is, you could find a 2001 that wasnt taken car of and the 97 would prevail,

granted i dont drive mine everyday ive had no problems other than the dredded highmileage leak, everything is good to go on my baby

^^^ but yes the lude was a pretty solidly designed car. i would get a manual tho. as long as they are taken car of like thomas said. miles is almost just a number to these cars. but less is always better lol

In essence they're all the same. The 99-01 cars had an extra 5HP but nobody knows where it came from. Maybe it was a typo in the brochure, but your ass dyno probably won't notice it anyway.

If you want an auto steer clear of the 97-99 as they've been known to...well, fail. Quite frequently. The 99+ cars had basically the same parts but aren't as prone to failure, but it has happened. But having said that, my auto is 7 years old, has done nearly 120,000km (about 75k miles) and isn't showing any signs of leaving me yet.

As with any sports car, especially one with a highly tuned engine make sure the maintenance has been done. If it hasn't it could be a direct route to the poor house, or worse.

Hang on a sec, we covered all this not long ago. Damn, I wrote all that before I realised! Oh well. Have a look around the site, it won't take long to find the rest of the info you're after. Welcome.

It's the same lip kit, just that the SH is painted. Is that what you meant?

I'm sure thats what he meant, but technically its still a little different. I have a 99 auto and I love it! But when I magically hopefully someday get the money I'm gonna drop in a new engine and swap it for manual.

All I really know is that I just bought a 2001 SE, and I dig the hell out of it. It has decent mileage, but it also has decent power whenever you want it. It is sexy as hell to boot. It's manual, leather interior, sunroof... for the price you really can't go wrong. Ludes have a strong following for a good reason. It sucks that they discontinued them, but in the same respect it is cool as **** because you can own a car that is made of pure sex and still not see one around all that often. And in all honestly when you see another Prelude, all you (I) can do is comment on how sexy that car is

Okay, if you want power, go with a 99-01 200HP versus 195HP. Some of us don't like the black interior on every lude after 98 in the us. The only other option is a 97-98 green prelude that comes with a tan interior. The SH has colored body additions, a different shift knob and steering wheel, plus it weighs more(only lil bit[not noticible]), and sits higher(not too much); also has ATTS(like lsd).

i would recommend NOT getting an SH...1) if the ATTS breaks, like mine did, Honda requires 80 bucks just to see what is wrong, and then another 1200 or so to fix it. and 2) Mods for the SH arent nearly as plentiful as those for the Base. The ATTS is a beast when it works, but when it doesnt, its just more weight and something else to spend money on. YAY

i picked up an '01 late last summer & I did no homework before picking it up, other than kelly blue booking it for a fair price. I thought that I could/would find a million aftermarket parts that would pull even more power from car, but I have to say that the basic mods done to this car do not yield much. The power:cost ratio is not what I was hoping. Now some say that in 5 generations Honda has squeezed virtually all the power out of the plant that it can. So you are left with medium priced & higher mods to extract more, so budget your money and time (yours or shops) wisely. The car stock though handles great, i say that coming from another import that had been set up with all the suspension mods. lastly, the look of the car has always caught my eye, especially the 3rd gens imo. ( i remember sitting in one when it was in the showroom floor new )

To add to what flyby said about modding the car, any mods you do won't do anything much without retuning the ecu...so get ready to spend some money if you want some power. Gotta pay to play.

Pooponurhead said it best, don't get the SH, because systems can go out. Also check on google under honda atts, you will find that the ATTS system is much like an LSD, when one wheel begins to slip, an lsd puts more power to that wheel that is slipping, just like ATTS.

Personally I would look for a 99-01 5 spd. Base or SH is up to you.
