Squeaky Noise When Reversing

Ok guys, here's my problem. A few months back, my car started making a squeaking noise every time I back up. Sounds like its coming from outside, maybe the brakes. Any ideas?

We need more of a description... Is it coming from the front of the car or the back? The wheels or the motor/transmission? Brakes applied or not?

It doesn't sound like brakes if it only happens in reverse... if it was brakes it would probably make the same noise driving forward at similar speeds.

Well it kinda sounds like its coming from all four tires, but maybe that means its actually coming from the bottom of the car, which explains why the sound is even. If its coming from somewhere on the bottom, would that be the transmission? I drive an auto btw. Thanks guys.

Well hmm, I dunno... On manual transmission cars the reverse idler gear whines as it spins faster while you increase speed in reverse... I'm not sure if automatic ludes sound the same though (I know some automatics do, and some don't sound similar to this in reverse). Have you ever heard a manual transmission car accelerate in reverse? It whines (not so much a squeek, but more of a whine)... almost sounds like a really loud remote control car... does it sound similar to that? Because if that's the case, it is perfectly normal.

No. It never used to do it. I tried to listen closer before and I think its coming from the left side. But I don't know if that's because I sit on the left side, or what. I tried moving my head to the middle of the car and it still sounded like it was coming from the left. Plus its definatly a squeak, cause I've heard a manual reverse and thats not it. Wish I could figure it out...

the auto reverse does the same thing... you can hear this squeak over the reverse whining? my guess is something with the breaks, sometimes fibers from the brakes will wear and kinda just hang from the pads and they can cause squeaking and squealing noise in reverse. does the noise increase in intensity or pitch as you speed up?

Yeah, actually it's louder when I'm not pressing on the brakes.

when's the last time you had your brake pads changed? If it's been a while, it's probably the wear indicators on the pads making contact with the rotors. The reverse direction might be associated with the fact that most self adjusting brake systems adjust the mechanism's travel and play when the vehicle brakes in reverse. If the wear indicators are close to being in contact with the rotor all the time, they might start (or maybe even just one) making the noise in the early stages of near-wear-out only in reverse. However, if you had the brake pads changed in the last 2 years or so, it is probably not be the brakes.

@Drew: No, the sound persists until I come to a complete stop, reguardless of if I'm braking.

@lostcount: I've only had the car for about a year and a half (maybe more). But I think they were changed when I got it.

Easiest way to eliminate the possibility of the brake pads making the noise. Replace them. It's an in-expensive option, and sure couldn't hurt anything. Might actually help, and will give you better braking.

I think I might have some lying around. I'll put 'em on when I get a chance, if I do. If not I'll run up to advanced and get some.
