trans not shifting right

I just bought a 97 that has been converted to a 5 speed. it is hard to shift into the forward gears, 1-3-5. Can someone point me in the right direction. Its hard to get into these gears and quite often grinds when I let out on the clutch. Its like its not going all the way into gear. The gears you pull back to shift into work fine. Is a cable needing adjusted or replaced? Thanks.

my buddy ran into a problem similar to this and it wound up replacing his syncros.. i doubt it would be a cable because the system is primarily hydraulic.
