Transmission Swap

this is my first posting.
my auto transmission went out and i was wondering how much it would cost to replace it.
the car only has 81k on it and it's kinda surprising that it went out so soon.
how much would it be to get a manual swap?
i don't really know much about swapping transmission but i wanna go back to stick.
it'd be awesome if someone explains what i need to do.
thanks.
merry xmas.

Send a message via AIM to mikemjohnson
dealer quoted me for 2700 for a USED automatic replacement with 130000 miles on it. so i told them to shove off
im hoping to get away with my manual swap, after labor, for less than 2000. honda-tech has some good writeups on it

I did a tranny swap on a 90 lude 3rd gen and believe me after i had finished i should have just bought a manual lude instead..getting the tranny and swapping it is easy..then comes the question of changing your pedals, changing your speedo cluster, you should get away with using your existing ecu, changing your stick shift and wiring. i believe the speedo is electronic. but the whole process is not something you can do yourself and should be left to competent mechanics but then thats just me.

Check around mate, for a 99 I believe that the tranny is warranted by the factory if under 100k, there was a class action lawsuit against Honda/Acura USA not long ago that lead to that result.

But if you'd rather swap to a manual (I can't blame you, can't wait to do it myself) yes it can be done, and will probably work out to be about the same sort of money.

Like R8GY said, there's a lot of stuff that goes on that you don't thnk of until you go to pull it out, so unless you're a more than competant mechanic it's a job best left to a pro.

I know that even here in the UK we have a problem with auto trannys' on 5th gen ludes apparantley there is some sort of mfg fault with them but naturally honda will never admit it.

The problem i had was I had spent too much money on mods on my car to just forget about it and buy another lude so what i did was look on ebay for another lude (same spec but manual) which was a non runner and managed to find one for $50 - paid the engineer to rip out the tranny, steering rack, pedals, cluster, ecu, wiring loom, cables for the stick shift, stick shift housing blah blah blah. and still had to pay him $600 for the work..the other prob was the engine management light wouldnt go off. had no cruise control, no aircon, the list was ****ing endless. in the end i had to take it to the dealers who then charged me another $800 to sort everything out. in the end i had a 1990 3rd gen 4ws sei manual and it moved like greased lightning but the headache i had to go through was endless. so in the end it just depends on whether you want the stress of doing all that just for a stick shift..if your lude is standard then best bet is to just keep ur tranny auto... but two words of advice - 1)take it to a proper mechanic if you have ur heart set on it and 2) be prepared to spend a lot of money

cool, i have a few more options.
would i have to buy a completely diff engine since my engine was meant for an A/T?
what parts do i need to make this swap happened?
i found a seller around the bay area parting out his 98 lude w/ 89k miles on it and i probably could grab all of the parts from him if i knew what to get.
good point R8GYY, i most likely will bring it to a reputible shop to get it done.
thanks fellas.

parts you need will be - maual gearbox and clutch plus flywheel plus housing - pedals, stick shift plus housing and metal cabling and linkage, ecu from a manual, clutch slave and master cylinder, clutch cable, u might need the speedo cable because i think the auto works slightly differently. u dont need a whole new engine..since both engine blocks should be the same u can just change the gearboxes and fitments should be the same....but please get some more advice from a pro because i did this a long time ago and it was on a 3rd gen but the fundamentals should be the same.

BEFORE YOU SWAP ANYTHING. call your local dealer and find out if you are still eligable for the extended warranty. i belive it was 99-01 had the warranty extended for free because a lot of 5th gens had faulty trannies that were going out extremely early. it was extended up to 10 years or 100,000 miles. if its not 99 then its the 00-01 but im almost positive its 99. if you're still eligable, i would take advantage of that because the new trannies have the defective part replaced in them so they will last you considerably longer. which will at least give you time to build up the funds to do it while you still have a working car

5th gen convert

Check out that thread.

Honda had problems with their automatic transmissions, sport shift & v6 transmissions as on the Accord, Prelude & TL(1997-2003).

5th generation Prelude was just not meant to sport an auto.
(bad karma)
