Innovative Competition Traction Bar Kit - Pics & Info

When I was researching this kit, I was not able to find as much information as I wanted. I hope that this information is helpful for others.

This is for Base Model (non-SH) fitment. Part number for the traction bar kit is 50110.

I also opted to use their front torque mount, part number 29740.

First question- Can you re-use the stock front engine mount? No.

The lower mounting bolt spacing on the stock mount is about 3.5". The bolt spacing on the Innovative bar is 1.25". Once I saw that, I didn't go any further with my comparison.

Can you re-use the stock splash shield/undertray?
No. The front crossmember that you are replacing contains most of the mounting provisions for your splash shield. If you are hellbent on keeping it, you're going to need to get really creative. If you are motivated by aerodynamics, then a properly designed splitter is going to be a better use of time. Additionally, you would need to cut up and clearance the stock undertray in several areas to clear the new bar.

Can you still use the stiffener that runs longitudinally (the one with the tow hook on it; the engine and trans straddle it)
Yep. No problem.

How is the fit and finish? How is the quality?
Fit is really great. I'm genuinely impressed. The shop I work for sells a fair number of Innovative products, and I know that they can turn out some great parts. This is no exception. Everything lines up perfectly, and additionally the tolerances are impressive. When I first started getting the Innovative front engine mount into position, I was worried that it was not going to fit. I was totally wrong. The tolerances on this part are very good. They designed it to follow the contour of the engine block, just like the stock part, and they did so very precisely. Totally stoked on this.

As for the build quality, everything is burly. This thing was built to withstand a nuclear attack. Everything is just beefy. Thick wall steel tube for the lateral portion of the bar, thick steel plate for the radius arm brackets, giant spherical bearings, big high quality hardware. Everything just looks like it is ready for whatever punishment you want to dish out. Four thumbs up.

I will be doing a track day in 2 weeks and I'm looking forward to increased front end feedback, livelier steering response, and hopefully can come off the corner a little harder.

Here's some more pictures to demonstrate fit and clearance.

My driver side innovative mount was crooked when we installed it on my bb6. They also sent my friend crooked 3rd gen h22 swap mounts. i wouldn't spend a dime with them again

I like it, does it feel more solid going over bumps in the road?

I know they've had their issues over the years. I remember the 2004-08 TL mount kits used to have some issues too. But they fixed them, and helped out customers who had wonky kits.

Yes. You could say that. You get better tactile feedback from the front end of the car. The steering feels more alive. I get a better idea of the surface condition of the road, and how that affects the grip of the tire.

Re: Innovative Competition Traction Bar Kit

I took the car to the track this past Saturday, and beat the crap out of it for all 5 of the 20 minute sessions. The front end of this thing feels amazing now. I'm so glad i did this mod. Compared to the last track day, the car feels so much sharper. It's crazy how much of a difference it made.

The coilovers i'm using are Tein Street Advance. These are tough to beat for the price in terms of longevity and reliability, and the ride quality is good. However they are by no means a motorsport coilover (nor do they claim to be). With the traction bar kit, it makes up for some of the shortcomings of this more street oriented damper.

With the stock front crossmember and radius rods, the front end felt more numb and sloppy. When you load the car up in a turn, especially a lower speed (like 2nd gear) turn, to go fast and have confidence it is very helpful to have some idea of how much the tire is gripping, and how much further you can push it before it lets go. The traction bar really helps you feel all this.

Like its name suggests, it also helped a lot with traction coming OUT of the corner. This is great for two reasons. Number one is obvious. You can put MORE power down SOONER. The tire is making better, more consistent contact with the road = more grip.

#2 is car control. The Prelude actually has a lot more willingness to rotate than I had expected. You can get the car to oversteer by unloading the rear end with trail braking or lift throttle. I really like this because a car that does not turn well is not very fun or very fast. Once you've got the car turned in and pointed the way you want, just get back on the gas to stabilize it. The Innovative traction bar kit helped a bunch here also. Because the tires have a better, more consistent contact with the road, you can modulate the throttle and apply more power, more accurately. This directly translates into more control.

TLDR:

Way more traction. Driver gets a way better idea of what the front tires are doing. Put down more power. Go faster. Any performance enthusiast that likes handling will enjoy this mod. You feel more connected with the car and what it's doing. Better control.

Closing thoughts:

I'm really impressed with this car overall. I used to have a couple of S2000s, an 2006 AP2 and then later an 2003 AP1. I set the AP1 up for track use. Excellent car. I had to sell it because I needed the money to go back to school. I really miss it.
I have always loved the Prelude and wanted one forever. So far it has been a reliable daily driver as well as an economical and capable car to run at the track.
I'M SO IMPRESSED WITH IT to be honest. I totally didn't expect it to be so capable on the track. It has a lot more potential particularly with chassis tuning. For example, I'd like to put a lot more camber into it. I'm only at -0.5*F and -1.0* R. That's weak AF. Would love to run at least -2* up front. Also some better shocks.

Re: Innovative Competition Traction Bar Kit

I was overall happy with my Innovative traction bar, but I did have one complaint. The four mounting holes are just through holes in square steel, so they compress a bit. After the first two weeks I developed a clunk because the bolts weren't tight against the bar anymore. I tightened them back up and haven't had an issue since, but they'd be better if there was a sleeve inside connecting the top and bottom plates

Re: Innovative Competition Traction Bar Kit

Hey, thanks! Yeah, i've been checking torque on all the fasteners since the install too! 47 lb ft on those for anyone interested. So far mine only needed a re-torque once too. That last two times they were perfect.
Definitely would be cool if they had a sleeve or something in there to further reinforce. I used some big washers there to try to spread the load a bit more.

Re: Innovative Competition Traction Bar Kit

Been under the car 3 more times since my last post. All fasteners have maintained their torque setting.
