Icon13 h23a vtec obd1 conversion problem

Hey guys, so I have a 97 prelude with an h23a vtec swap. The car is running and has been running reliably for around 6000 miles on the stock p13 obd2 ecu. I know, "that ecu is not tuned correctly for the longer stroke, etc". I've heard it a million times, but I need to daily this car while I build my other one. I've heard a lot of mixed answers to converting to obd1 and using a chipped and tuned ecu for this motor. I have a chipped p28 that supposedly has the basemap for my motor (I made sure it was the jdm vtec h23a). The most common answer I got was I just needed the ecu and the conversion harness and It will run the motor fine. Well it didn't, the car started up but I had to feather the throttle to keep it running. Usually I try to diagnose this stuff by myself but I've been racking my brain trying to search for the issue. So the details, I'm using the usdm IM and all its sensors. swapped oil pump with crank sensor and am using the usdm external coil distributor. Simply put, I pretty much put all the obd2 usdm sensors on the h23a so I'd be able to use the p13 ecu. I want to get the most potential out of this motor, which is why I want to convert to obd1. I know the p28 can't control the iabs in the IM but that shouldn't be causing the car to die at idle. The only thing I can think of is that my ecu does not have the correct basemap on it. Anyone have any insight? All the help is much appreciated, thanks for reading.

Re: h23a vtec obd1 conversion problem

I understand a tune is eventually needed, but the basemap should at least run the car. I've worked on multiple swapped cars that ran on a basemap, just not sure why my Prelude won't. The issue with tuning is where I'm at there aren't a lot of people that tune 90's hondas, the only guy that does wouldn't waste his time on a stock tune. Considering he tunes/builds 500+ whp cars very frequently. I'll take my ecu to someone and have them check the basemap and make sure it's the right one.

Re: h23a vtec obd1 conversion problem

it may be that the basemap is not that good there and it need adjusting.

some basemaps can be pretty rough - basicly theyre starting point for a tune

otherwise your engine is healthy and maintenanced properly?

This type of swap has been done several times and plenty of threads about it, cause I've actually done thus swap for several people. I hope you still have your original ecu. Here's a list of what you needed to swap from your old motor to this motor in order to keep it all as if it came in the car factory

-intake manifold
-dizzy
-ignition coil
-oil pump
-crank sensors
-motor harness

No need for any extra wiring or special ecu. If you swapped these parts over, car would run normal.

Yeah the car runs completely fine, I've done a compression test and it's solid across all cylinders, very minimal oil consumption, no cel. I have a slight idle fluctuation that I've been tracking down but other than that it runs perfect.

I think you misunderstood my situation. The car is running with the h23a vtec using the obd2 p13 ecu. I've been driving it daily for 7ish thousand miles. I am trying to down step to obd1 using a chipped p28 with the h23a vtec basemap. The ecu I have must not have a very specific basemap because it won't even keep the car running without me feathering the throttle.
