Difficulty opening door from inside handle

Ever since I removed my door panel to fix up some wiring, the interior door handle takes a lot of pressure to open to door. So much so that the handle snapped in half and I have to resort to using the remaining nub to get the thing open.

I've also noticed that the handle no longer sits flush with the panel that holds it. I have to push it towards the door with pretty considerable force to get it to sit flush, and it just springs back when I release it.

The outside handle works perfectly fine and takes no more force to open than the passenger side.

So before I get a new handle assembly, I want to know what the problem is. I assume that the linkage is either damaged or shifted slightly causing the issue. Has anyone experienced this? Is it possible to fix without pulling the door panel off again? Any advice is appreciated; thanks!
