H22a2 vs h22a4

How different is the engine internaly?
I have the 5th gen repair manual to rebuild the "a4" but i want to get a "a2" instead. Should i buy the 4th gen manual or can i use the 5th gen?

Thank you,

Re: H22a2 vs h22a4

Main difference is open VS closed decks, a4 has little bit bigger crank mains and a4 has slight higher compression - different pistons. Newer a4 has slight better cams as well

Re: H22a2 vs h22a4

Prototype, are you sure you're not thinking of the H22A1?

This is according to wikipedia:

H22A1
Found in the American 4th gen Prelude VTEC (BB1). It produces 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp) @ 6,800 rpm & 153 ftlbf (207 Nm) @ 5,500 rpm and comes with a black valvecover.
Found in the Canadian 4th gen Prelude SR-V (BB1). It produces 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp) @ 6,800 rpm & 153 ftlbf (207 Nm) @ 5,500 rpm and comes with a black valvecover.
Found in the Australian 4th gen VTi-R (BB1). It produces 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp) @ 6,800 rpm & 153 ftlbf (207 Nm) @ 5,500 rpm and comes with a black valvecover.

H22A2
Found in the European 4th gen Prelude 2.2i VTEC (BB1). It produces 185 PS (136 kW; 182 hp) and comes with a black valvecover.

H22A4
Found in the American 5th gen Prelude Base and Type-SH (BB6). It produces 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp) @ 7,000 rpm & 156 ftlbf (212 Nm) @ 5,250 rpm and comes with a black valvecover.
Found in the Canadian 5th gen Prelude Base, Type-SH, and SE (BB6). It produces 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp) @ 7,000 rpm & 156 ftlbf (212 Nm) @ 5,250 rpm and comes with a black valvecover.
Found in the Australian 1997-1998 Prelude VTi-R and VTi-R ATTS (BB6). It produces 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp) @ 7,000 rpm & 156 ftlbf (212 Nm) @ 5,250 rpm and comes with a black valvecover.

In another table it states the main difference being the Closed Deck(A1) and Open Deck(A4), also the main crank journal diameter being 50mm in the H22A1 and 55mm in the 98-2001(strange) H22A4. I believe the extra 5mm is what gives the A4 its higher compression.

FYI this part:

Re: H22a2 vs h22a4

If it is an A1, 4th gen manual.

If it is an A4, 5th gen manual.

There were differences between early A4's and later A4's as well.
