Full Exhaust Overhaul

So like the title says, I want to replace all the main exhaust components on my 5th gen. All existing components right now are stock. Super rusty and dirty and doesn't sound great. So I want to have a 3 inch pipe system with a decent sounding muffler with two exhaust tips instead of one big one. I found a site that will sell a 3 inch 304 stainless steel pipe setup with all the needed hardware. Now I would like advice on a good compatible catalytic converter and two piece header. I've found that most if not all of the most highly regarded headers are hard to get, so any leads on a RMF, SMSP, Hytech, or SSR would be appreciated.

Re: Full Exhaust Overhaul

The best of the old off-the-shelf headers are getting harder to come by for Preludes. SMSP, RMF, Hytech, SSR, Mugen etc. are practically unobtainium nowdays since they're not being produced anymore. PLM (kiddracing) make replicas of a few of these designs but I haven't heard much about their quality. The Highend looks like the old RMF drag header, which needed a half-rad to fit properly, not sure if these have the same problem. Vibrant recently bought their header back for a limited run too but I'm pretty sure they're all gone. Unless you can find one second hand then you could look at a Jun or Fujitsubo from Japan, they still make their 4-2-1 designs which apparently get decent gains across the rev range but are costly. Stay away from Megan or DC, not worth it. Other than that, probably go custom.

As for the cat, probably doesn't matter too much. Magnaflow are good. Be careful if you are in California.

Re: Full Exhaust Overhaul

Very happy with my setup. See signature. The collector is only 2.5 coming off the header though.

Re: Full Exhaust Overhaul

Nice vid. It sounds a little high pitched/raspy for my taste though, is it like that in person? Did you bother with a resonator in the middle or is it a straight pipe from the cat to the muffler?

Also, I saw that needle hit 90mph on a snowy road. Tsk Tsk

Re: Full Exhaust Overhaul

i had stock fans and radiation with my high end header, only thing i needed to do was modify the cross member and then got a traction bar

Re: Full Exhaust Overhaul

High and raspy? Were you listening through the speakers on your laptop? It's actually pretty quiet in person until you go WOT and hit vtec. I had Apexi on my 4th gen. That was a raspy fart cannon.

No resonator. Road wasn't snowy. You can't even see the road in the video.

No

Re: Full Exhaust Overhaul

I was listening through headphones. You're right, at idle and low RPM it has a nice low note, just saying the high RPM stuff is not to my taste. Not an attack, just an opinion. If you love it then that's all that matters. I'm thinking about upgrading my system again and couldn't decide whether to run a resonator or not, now I've decided.

You can totally see the road in the vid. Ok, the road itself isn't snowy just the sides. Whatevs. I don't really care, the cops are your business to deal with as you please.

Re: Full Exhaust Overhaul

Hytech is possibly the only of the original 5 or so companies that continues to make H22 headers.

Randy of RMF passed

off the top of my head, I forget the other oldies....

RMF drag headers did not require a half rad. Fan relocation, yeah, but you can use a normal or dual core rad.

Any of those headers used, still go for $800 and up.

My advice: stick with 2.5" pipe. It's easier to control sound than 3". And 3" isn't worth the hassle unless you intend to boost, despite the minimal n/a power gains.

Re: Full Exhaust Overhaul

Sorry man. Didn't mean to sound like I was on the offensive. I'm happy to meet and share ideas with other enthusiasts on this forum. That's why we are all here right?

All I meant was that little speakers on a laptop or phone can't do I good job of reproducing an exhaust note.

As for those roads, that was done on a military base and my friends are cops.

I have an RMF drag header and a dual core full sized koyo radiator. Fan relocated to the front for clearance

Re: Full Exhaust Overhaul

I haven't looked at this thread in a while. With more research I concluded that I only need a 2.5" in order to not have any loss in torque. Still haven't found any of the recommended headers for sale.
