Icon1 Valve Adjustment

I'm going to be painting my valve cover and figured I'd do some MX while I have it off. Looking at the valve adjustment procedure it lists the clearance tolerance at .15-19mm for intake and .17-.21mm for exhaust. At work when we have torque tolerance we set to the middle of the spectrum.

Is there a consensus for what the valves should be set to within the community? Max closed or max open, or does it matter at all? Also, is this preventative MX or should this only been done when there is an issue?

Re: Valve Adjustment

If no one has any suggestions I'll just set them in the middle .17mm intake and .19mm exhaust. I figure this will account for expansion and contraction as the engine heats up and cools.

Btw this is a great tutorial VIDEO

Re: Valve Adjustment

Lean toward the loose side of the tolerance. Too tight can cause the burnt valves.

Re: Valve Adjustment

I think when I did mine I went lazy and set them all to 0.007" (about 0.18mm) and haven't had any problems. Most of the valves (both intake and exhaust side) didn't even need adjusting at this spacing, but a few seemed way off. I figure that Honda gave us a range of values without any justification because anything in these ranges is fine.

Re: Valve Adjustment

I was thinking that as long as they are within the tolerance I would leave them alone, but I'm the kinda weirdo guy that can't sleep if all the beers in the fridge aren't facing forward. I'll let you guys know how it goes and if I feel smoother acceleration/idle.
