Rearview mirror housing removal ???

Hey guys, I'm new to the board.

I bought my '97 Lude when it first came out in November 1996. I'm not a car race enthusiast. I tried to get into it (switching side markers ONLY ) but it wasn't my thing.

Anyhow, I broke the rearview mirror trying to fit a 24" TV inside my car. This is another reason why I'm selling this car to buy a truck but that's neither here or there. I removed the interior light but how the heck do I remove the housing where the rearview mirror goes? I'm afraid if I yank and pull on it I might break or rip it.

Please help.

If this is the wrong sub-forum, I apologize in advance.

TIA

bump, knocked my mirror off, need to put it back in there, how do you take off that plastic around the dome light to get this thing screwed back in?

Well there is 2 bolts holding the lamp housing up there along with 2 clips at the front of it. Check the link for a pic.

Then there is just one bolt that holds the mirror up there. Here is a pic. Check the link.

Hopefully that helps,

Okay, I forgot to tell you guys I was able to remove the housing (after removing all the screws - 2 holding it in place) by gripping one side with my fingers, then squeezing it, and finally just pull downward.

Came off with no problems.

After close inspection, I didn't break rearview mirror but somehow just completely knocked it out of it's holding block. Really glad Honda didn't screw the mirror into a base or anything. Actually, I think this has got to be the best design ever for a rearview mirror.

Whew! Thanks a lot man! i would have broken that grey housing so bad! Thought it just popped off, slid off, pryed off, snapped off. Much more intricate than i thought, but not at all difficult.

Re: Rearview mirror housing removal ???

glad I found this site for some good advice! the lady i bought my 2000 prelude from took a lot of maintenance "shortcuts" but i think with a little TLC I've got a great car on my hands. They actually stuffed cardboard into the plastic cover where the rearview mirrow goes to hold the rearview in place- i couldnt live with that and its been driving me nuts trying to figure out how to get the rear part of that panel to come off!--Dave

+1 consolidates everything in one thread and gives people who search a bigger reward, instead of clicking multiple threads to get bits and peices of the puzzle from each.

Re: Rearview mirror housing removal ???

Try car-part.com for a used one. Thing is, Honda uses the same rear view in a whole buncha cars. Try your local junkyard.
