code 8 (tdc) sensor or timing off?

98 prelude sh.

I made a bad decision to race my car earlier tonight. I was running it pretty hard, with some mishifts and accidentally redlining like a noob.

anyway after all that, My CEL came on and I noticed that my engine would not rev past 3k ( regardless of gear, even neutral ) drove it home and checked the code (paper clip method, 8 fast blinks, code 8 , tdc sensor ). disconnected battery and connected it again ( reset the ecu ). Car takes forever to start and is cranking very oddly.

Did my timing belt slip a tooth? or is it possible that my tdc sensor got knocked out loose? or did it just go bad on me?

what should i begin to check for first?

car sounds fine and drives fine except wont rev past 3k and it cranks very weird, making it hard for it to start. Any advice before I start trowing parts at it will be very helpful. Thank you

your car is in limp mode

did you make sure it was code 8 and not 80 (EGR related)? what kind of mishift you had?

you could get used tdc sensor and try with that? not very expensive to check

Re: code 8 (tdc) sensor or timing off?

8 fast flashes that's code 8 if I'm not mistaking. just racing mistakes like when trying to switch gear, it didn't pop in gear fast enough, stayed in neutral and engine over revd. Happened like 2-3 times. That happens when I try to be Brian from fast and furious lmao. my friend and I are going to start by checking the timming on the cams and removing the rubber seal on the trans to check the bottom end tdc. Hopefully it's just the timming slipped and I don't have to replace the sensor

Btw the tdc sensor is a harness that also includes the crank sensor rigth? So I would replace both?

Re: code 8 (tdc) sensor or timing off?

got the car checked out today and they told me the timing belt is off by a couple notches and that I will have to redo the belt to set it correctly. Im wondering if any internal damage was done to the engine while driving it back home like this. The car sounded fine and ran fine. just woulnt rev past 3k. Do engines bust when you drive it with bad timing?

yeah I will have to do that after I redo my timming belt. That would be the best way to see if the engine went bad.

Re: code 8 (tdc) sensor or timing off?

I have the same code but One of my cam gears is literally one tooth off. Would this be enough to kick the sensor and bring me to limp mode as well?
