cv axle woes

Been fighting trying to get the drivers side cv axle out of the midshaft. 99 base model. tried prying on it and spinning at the same time. Any tricks? THINKING ABOUT GETTING SOME VISEGRIP SLAP HAMMER OR SOMETHING. hELP!

Re: cv axle woes

I tried this stuff called Freeze and Release (made by Loctite) when trying to get the CV's out of the Mazda. It's a penetrating lube that cools the metal too, so it makes the metal shrink a little and lets the lube penetrate more. I found it works heaps better than plain old WD-40.

Re: cv axle woes

I just turn the axle between pry or strike attempts. You just need to catch that compression clip at the right angle. Or you could unbolt the half shaft and remove it from the tranny since it is easier to pry against. Once the whole thing is out of the car you can work on it at a bench and possibly use gravity to assist you. I would suggest bolting the half shaft up before installing the new axle though.

Re: cv axle woes

Remove half shaft and axle assembly as one unit together. Bring it to a bench or on the ground and beat it off with a big hammer. You will be there prying on it till the cows come home otherwise.

Re: cv axle woes

Got the small sledge hammer and gave it a few small whacks. Finally popped out . Did it under the car without removing the half shaft. Thanks guys!
