Icon5 Engine Problems, Please Help :(

Hi everyone,
So I bought a 1997 Prelude SH during the summer this year and suddenly since winter and the cold has started to come, problems have started coming up. First thing I noticed was this incessant clicking noise coming from the engine. It sounds pretty similar to metal on metal tapping. It happens when idling, and all the way up to about 4500RPM. It also gets more "intense" (I guess that's the right word) when accelerating, and also when it first starts on a cold day or when the engine hasn't been run in a while. The next thing I've started noticing, is that when I start it up on a particularly cold day, temperature-wise, not just when the engine hasn't been started in a while, it revs high and then low, nearly to a stall. And it will just do that for a while. I usually slowly step on the gas a bit and then head out on my way and there will be no loss of power and the odd revving will stop once it gets warmed up. I'm not particularly worried about the revs compared to the clicking. I'm pretty limited in knowledge of cars and engines, but I'd like to do more things myself, so hopefully you guys will able to translate car talk into English ideally lol. So any help would be so greatly appreciated!! Thanks everyone! :)

Re: Engine Problems, Please Help :(

Welcome.

The idle raising and lowering is known as "idle bounce" to Honda fans. It is usually from the part of the idle system known as the FITV. Fast Idle Control Valve. It is a wax plug that when contracted while cool coolant passes through the hoses allows the coolant to get past it, thereby raising the idle. When the coolant warms the wax plug is suppposed to expand to cause idle to become less.
What happens over time is coolant sludge builds around the plunger or the diameter of the wax plugs is slightly reduced by the friction of coolant flowing past.

There is a "idle bounce" thread in the diy section that explains how to fix it. Please don't take the beginning of post 1 personal. It used to be that several times a week folks would start a thread about... way back when the thread was started. TwoK has helped literally thousands here, but sometimes enough was enough.
the FINAL idle problem thread!!!!!

It's located the top left of the throttle body area of the engine. It's not hard to fix and will introduce you to some of the inner workings of Hondas coolant temperature controls of the idle system.

Used to be when these cars were a lot younger tightening the plunger was the only fix. As the cars have aged and coolant sludge have built up sometimes it only requires a flush throught the small hoses to get it working proper again.

Like T said, have the valves adjusted. Not a job for beginners in my opinion. So this will be a good time to learn about reliable shops in your area. Ask around. Ask the older people in your life who takes care of their cars. Chances are good they know who not to go to as well as those who do things properly. The dealer should be your last resort but... they do things correctly, they just charge a lot to do the work that sometimes can be done by others for less.
That should help the car start better and hopefully stop the tapping.

Best regards.

Pretty much got flamed for driving like a jackass and was told to slow down. And I'll be damned, slowing down fixed it.

Wow this was so helpful! I am going to try some of these things today. Also, after you said that there are tons of threads about it, I went and checked and you sure are right, there are a bunch lol. So sorry about rehashing old news! Thanks for all the help bykfixer!
